Well, that's a lot of surprising designers.

In case anyone didn't know yet, nob actually made Tutankhamun. I don't really have the capacity to write about every bot like some people can, but I'll at least explain how I feel about my own here.

(For anyone interested, which you shouldn't be.)

Overflow

I like how this turned out. It was meant to be simple and anyone I know who talked about it seemed to appreciate that. I chose those legs because of the blue stripes and how the color portions are on them, there wasn't really any other choice to solve the mismatched shapes problem without hurting other details I cared more about.

Maliwan

I should've named this Caustic Maliwan or Maliwan: Caustic, so the green color at least made more sense. Besides that, the most literal way I can describe this as the person who made it is that it's an RJ with Maliwan colors slapped on it. There's no depth. I should've spent more time to actually bring multiple aspects of the theme together. "form did not meet function" - nob

Smithereens

This wasn't meant to be a continuation of Sludge Dredd or anything else. I was trying to avoid that and use a navy color with gold detailing and some other ones instead, but I was frustrated and leaned toward green after a while.

I shouldn't have abandoned what I was originally going for though, because it ended up not having anything interesting to look at. I also invested the most amount of time into this one overall, so I'm pretty sad over this. The write up nob did for this was dead accurate.

its solidly made but like its pretty boring and leaves a lot to be desired in the paint department. playing with the arrangement of the colors would have helped this bot a lot more because it just looks too standard to me. great eye for detail but the paint was definitely done after the bot was made and it was far too restricted to the weapon choice. theres no sense of ADVENTURE here

Handsome Jack

This is my only robot I'm very happy with. The people who haven't played Borderlands to appreciate the theme didn't seem to like it anywhere near as much as those who did, unfortunately. All three of the people who I hoped would like it really seemed to like it though, and that made me feel pretty giggly inside.

One of the only things I would've changed was maybe the name to Hyperion II instead since it's obviously not a direct cosplay of Jack and can make it seem a little out of place. I was also more interested in some of the more frontal angles when making it, like the core looks a little better shaped and you can see some other smaller details like the eye color going with the extensions. The angle TM did still had quite a bit of things that look better in it though, so I think that's a case of not being able to catch all the details, sadly.

The Mistake

I don't know why I entered this, it's an unfinished attempt at something. I was originally going to toss it and enter two of nob's bots instead. At least some people thought there were some neat things on it, I guess.

Anyway, good contest. A lot of the generations were stronger for me than the other ACDCs, except for 2nd Gen. (Which was still pretty nice.) TM was also a thousandfold more competent than Drac was with hosting, and Not-Hunter's image quality for 5th Gen and his support in general blew the old rubbish away. Yay!

i wanted to win gen 4 and 5 the most and technically i did it tks to fook

i didnt put enuf effort into gen 2 and 3 so next time i do dat

GOOD IDEA TO ADD WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT MY OWN ROBITS

CHIEF

the main inspiration for this one was the right arm unit. once i saw that and thought about the visor head, i knew i had to make this robit and thats all there was to it. i didnt enter a second ac because i forgot about doing it before the deadline but it probably helped me in the long run by not splitting up my votes (unless i made something shitty)

USS REVENGE

for 2nd div i wanted to take robits from the previous contest and make them suck less, and this one was in reference to the 2 shittiest hovers pedobear and that other one i dont remember that sucked. it ended up being similar only in core and legs because the weapon arms were shitty and needed a change. i ended up getting fkd over by color differences between my tv and tm pictures but i was too lazy to adjust

JAGDKOMMANDO

same idea as USS REVENGE where id take a shitty bot from the previous contest and make it into something better, but unfortunately scuttle shuttle sucks way too much to be saved and i will never try to adjust an LS bat ever again

TEST AC PLEASE IGNORE

3rd gen i actually have quite a few actual LR bats thatd be acceptable for this contest but i am not confident in them yet so i entered 2 joke bats. originally i was going to enter 1 joke and 1 good one but i just did 2 joke instead. as far as the ac goes i didnt know if i wanted to have the 100% accurate replica or if i wanted to slap on dual KSAW and other ridiculous stuff to the test AC and enter it like that. i went with the replica because of the overall concept of seeing the basic training ac in an aesthetics contest

TOP NOTCH PILOT

rip tnp

TUT TUT

i had about 6 ACDC-ready ACs i made this time around and this was one of them. i had no inspiration for any of this really, i just did stuff until i got to a workable concept and pushed it to completion, so thats how tut tut was born

IREZUMI

i wanted to see what it would look like to create a camouflage pattern out of decals would be like and this is what happened when i used 2 of the npc emblems in a semi random manner. head choice couldve been different, but i made the frame first and didnt look back after that

ROBOT X

this bot looks a lot better in game and tm did a shitty job with pictures especially since he didnt get a back shot. this was my favorite bot out of the 6 FA designs i made because the colors were really fun to do. no real concept behind it other than that tho

BOB

acvd division was miserable every time i saw it for every contest so i finally entered it to see if it was just the game or if everyone who entered acvd sucked at making cool stuff. the verdict (HAH HAH) was a combination of both because i had a bit of difficulty with making decent robits but i was able to make bob and prove that there is still hope for vd. the construction elements seemed to fit very well with the aesthetic of vd and there just so happened to be the perfect parts to promote that concept to its fullest.

SN-VD014DCAC

yo i straight up got my show stolen by viper and especially with its positioning in the voting threads directly under viper, its no surprise i got 0 points. the moral of the story is to add decals to everything in gen 4 and 5 or you will lose

SIX BOTS WITH OVERALL VOTES

No one even gives a flying fuck about this.

Headless Horse-Man: The first bot I had an idea for that made me decide to enter bots, which was inspired by Reverbot's dark as shit colours from last contest. Apparently Siri has a better one.

Coleslaw: I saw the big linear guns and thought "I'm going to build an Ac around those big linear guns." So I gave him big arms and big core. Whoever said in the batcast that he was named randomly, you were correct. I stared at him for about five seconds after completion and thought "fuck it I'll call it Coleslaw."

Obruo: The only bot I was satisfied with while building, but by this point I am unsatisfied with it, cause other bots this competition did a better job of what I was trying to accomplish, namely Baron and Yellow Jacket.

Watch: Halfway thru making Obruo I had the idea of entering a bot with a youtube link for a name. It didn't have to be the purple AC you see, if could have been any of the other 5 or so I was sitting on that I considered entering. I just really wanted to mess with the naming aspect. Taurus' reaction in chat was worth it. The Ac itself was just supposed to use as many jagged parts as possible, and purple is my favourite colour.

Congrats to Exorcet for making my favourite and least favourite bots this whole competition.

First off, props to everyone that entered, voted, or otherwise enjoyed the contest. It was a lot of fun, and overall I think this batch of bots is probably the strongest yet. Whether because of really solid ideas or effort, it worked out well.

Thanks to TM for hosting and picture duty, and to Not Hunter for Gen V pics. I was a bit of a pain in asking for my pictures to be certain ways.

Not specifically contest related, but another thanks to Not Hunter for helping me get through VD.

My bots:

SKEE~DOOOOO

SKI-DOO is a brand of snowmobile. In SOME PARTS OF THE WORLD their name is as synonymous with the machine as, say, Kleenex is with tissue. It's also fun to say. I knew I was going to make it the moment I saw those legs. The colours are kind of standard for SKI-DOO.

Donatello

I put in a hell of a lot of time...trying to make a quad that didn't work, then I accidentally this robit in about five minutes. I was actually trying not to make any humanoids, but I couldn't not enter this, and then I just said screw it.

WALL-E: THE GRITTY REBOOT

I hate making bots in AA, so I just started messing around. I made an actual attempt at a WALL-E cosplay, but it looked stupid, so I beefed it up, laughed at the name, and rolled with it.

Oh, also: I originally had antenna head and switched to what it has. Not sure how I feel about that decision. I agree with TM about the tread colour needing some minor adjustment.

Foot Patrol and Woodgutter

Foot Patrol is largely inspired by Demolition Man. The paint scheme is reminiscent of the police cars from the movie, with the black changed to a really dark slightly off blue to match the officer uniforms. I tried it on numerous other bots, and to me it really works well as a standardized paint scheme (like a uniform). If I could have added an emblem, I'd have put the S.a.P.D. logo on there, and the location (front right shoulder) would have been perfect. The police element heavily influenced the name, which just happened to work really well with it being a quad as well.

The red lines are a remainder of the original idea I was working with, and are meant to look like wiring. They wrap around the head and core combination, which is supposed to be like a generator/battery, and lead up the arms to power the weaponry. They were the most influential aspect of the frame choice, though the shape of most parts, especially the legs, suit the DM idea to me as well. The boosters look like plug prongs just to add a bit more to the idea.

The two themes combined, along with the weaponry, were also meant to give an expensive and technological look to it in order to play opposite of Woodgutter, which is meant to look cheap, durable, and rugged.

The main inspiration for Woodgutter was Rambo, with a hint of Dutch from Predator as well as the Predator itself mixed in. I wanted to make a camouflage bot, and I really liked the overall idea on this. The red is blood, splashed around from the dual blades, covering the right arm and fading as it goes. I particularly like how it looks like it's draining into the gaps on the legs. At its base, it's really just a grimy, washed out, standard issue military robot with weaponry suitable to jungle/guerilla warfare.

I considered using the head that Wasteland Trader has for a far more aggressive look, but I ultimately liked the almost fern-like and radar appearance of the head used more, and thought it served a more functional purpose - particularly for the sniper rifle. Even though I didn't use camo on the head, I think I managed to tie it in with the rest of the paint fairly well.

Woodgutter is my favourite bot I've made of any contest. I wanted to call it Rambot (for Rambo), but wanted to draw more attention to the gutter idea.

Humidor

I accidentally the frame while dicking around with parts, and I accidentally the paint while trying to make jaguar camouflage (which worked out well enough). After some significant changes to the colouring, I got the most typically "me" bot I entered this contest, and one I thought only nob and I would like. I'm surprised at how positively it was received.

I really like the warmth of it, and the bright teal details are meant to maintain a more robotic appearance. I've got a penchant for boxier bots, and I really like the stance the legs gave to this one. The bot inspired the name. Just seemed to fit.

Sau'RaPyleen

I wasn't going to enter Gen 4, but TM said there was very few entries, so I whipped a couple of bots together. This was the first, and the only idea I really had going for the division. Basically it's a reptilian invasion bot or something. The name didn't really have anything to do with the build, I just liked the gag. I'm actually really happy with the bot. I like the alien look of the frame, and the scaled camo paint.

TH3 R4D H8R

TM hates those legs, nob hates red/black, I saw "h8r" used in chat a lot during build time, I like the word rad, yadda yadda yadda. I actually like the frame a lot, but the bot itself is nothing more than filler and a couple playful jabs at people.

Gladiator

I wanted to make something really clean since I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from the picture quality. The frame came together nicely, and I feel it really suits the idea; particularly the armour pieces on the legs and the left shoulder. The weaponry was an obvious choice.

I haven't figured out decals, but I still wanted the paint to accentuate certain aspects of the bot, and I think I did okay with the layout of it. It does look better in the default garage, as the sort of browny orange and the bluish grey get a brightness, sheen, and sparkle to them, along with more of a yellow tint which counters out the blue. The result is something that looks more like silver, gold, and red, which are colours I generally associate with gladiators. I agree with Jackson's comment on my bright red details - that probably wasn't the right choice.

If I manage to figure out decals, I may revisit this bot.

Ultimately, I succeeded in my goal for this contest: I like all of my bots.

Congrats to King Tut. The law has been broken.

Thanks TM for hosting and taking pics (for the latter, Srash as well!). Congrats to nob and sbu, and further thanks to everyone who participated, whether that was submitting, voting, or both.

Oh man, do I gotta spoiler this? What if it gets lost like every other spoiler pre-2012. If anything the results could stand to be spoilered.

Klondike Joe

This guy isn't a reference to anything. It wasn't until I finished the frame that I gave him a random name, and realized he could be Duke Nukem-ish with appropriate weapons. Happy accidents. The color scheme for Joe started off as my version of the Horse-Man. When I realized the brown was going to be hard to make right on a black background, I gave up and went for a biped approach. I vaguely drew inspiration from Greenman to make, well, a man. I did mess up with the coloring (the black spots and the gold bars on either end) as well as messed up the initial PM to TM (thanks again for changing Joe's shirt). As for why Klondike? Iono, it just popped up in my mind.

Metanoia

So I hear this was exogen-esque? Metanoia was the result of my stubbornness to make a quad, and I kept rendering different color combos until I hit something that seemed palatable. The gold yellow hands and accents on the arms were for quirkiness, I didn't want the color scheme to be completely the same throughout. To me, imbalance creates balance. The name is something I'd been wanting to use on an AC for a long time, and it fits how this bot came to be.

Uchibenkei

Yet another name I'd been saving up for. I learned about the word through an anime or manga, can't remember which; this is what it apparently means. People were right about why I used LETHALDOSE, they are reminiscent of the rope things you see hanging on the backs of shrine maidens in media and a Gouki (?) costume. Uchibenkei has "Benkei" in it, so I went for big arms, a massive gun, and the melee piler thing for punching or something. I used a two-tone color scheme to separate the pants, but I'm not quite sure why I settled for green and yellow. Tbh this isn't something I'm completely satisfied with, but I'm glad some people thought it was decent for this ACDC.

Ochre Hornet

In the batcast nob was right, this is a modified version of a useable online bat (I suck at the multiplayer portion and this is one of a few that give me relatively good results). The paint needed to be more vibrant, but at the time I wasn't aware of how washed-out it really was. As I mentioned before, imbalance creates balance, and juxtaposing that horrid green with the marigold and gray was something I thought would be fine. In retrospect I think I ought to've used just pure yellow instead, or something else, because the green really does change the tone of the bot. Weapon camo was to match the stripes on hornets, and I really thought the Saplas looked fine on this guy. Still do. The Latona legs were to make it seem airy, and everything else is probably self-explanatory.

Baby's Wish

Name was brought about due to the white/sky-blue scheme. The red is something I came up with later that seemed fitting as a third color (I didn't want to leave it at two). The colors are too washed-out here as well, but I'd just changed televisions and the new one outputs the color differently. I thought the tops of the guns were reminiscent of baby bottles but that's about it for justification. I honestly thought this guy would be better received, the core is one of my favorites aesthetically.

Hamfist

Hamfist comes from "ham-fisted," which is why the weapon and the arms are so awkwardly juxtaposed. Pink cause ham. Large body and legs cause fat cause pig cause ham. I knew it wouldn't do well at all but I entered it cause I'd run out of motivation. Next contest I'll do proper decals, honest.

Yup, it was the forum update when Niji had custom spoiler tags set up. It's probably never going to happen again.

If there's a specific topic you want fixed, you can link me to it through PM and I'll try editing the posts. I used to do this a while ago with anything I came across, but stopped when I ran into a lot of problems with the ModSec application Niji's host runs, so there's a chance I still can't fix certain posts.

Either way, you shouldn't feel weird about using spoiler tags.

It was fun to be a part of the contest, even if only a small part. Because bandwagon I will AC speech, but also because I have things to say, kind of.

Spoiler tags are for communists (!!!!)

Matrix

I basically played up to this by stating repeatedly that no one would recognize my designs before the contest. So of course I tried to make the most Exorcet design possible. It was asked on batstrema whether this was my actual LR AC. It is not, Kneeling sucks and so does Ettin. I considered entering my actual AC, but in the end decided to make it the aesthetic of Exorcet rather than an actual design of mine. Add more EN weapons, change to frame a bit and there you do. I like what nob said on stream, that the fatal flaw of this AC is that the back cannon shoots purple instead of blue. I didn't even consider that honestly, but having a blue laser back weapon would have fit with this whole ridiculous idea.

Speaking of ridiculousness, I was also considering entering Matrix for every division. I did want to enter all divs, but without the games and being unsure how long it would take to come up with serious designs for everything I just decided to go LR and thought one Matrix was enough. Even if the ACDC did not have enough KARASAWA.

Also in hindsight, or whatever, I think Griffon (from the actual Matrix) would have looked better than Ettin. Though on the other hand, the AC would have to be right handed. I prefer left hand KARASAWA's.

Hexagonal

This was the real entry and I'm glad it did as well as it did. I spent about 30 minutes total doing designs, from start to end. That's not to say I didn't try though. The idea behind this AC came through well. People thought it looked a hulking weapon, which is exactly what I wanted. The inspiration for it came from Mech Warrior style robots I guess. The frame captures it really well, but I had no idea what to do for the head. The original was the radar head, which I think goes well with basically any RJ. Though toward the end I felt like I wanted something more original. LADYBUG looks simple and rugged and I think it's a good fit, even if it still looks kind of weird.

Then there was the paint. No ideas. It started off Matrix colored of course because the AC in that garage slot was Matrix colored, as fortold by batstrema, but that would have given it away. I didn't want it to be completely obviously that this was my AC (though I think the name gives it away). In the end I settled for a kind of two-tone camoflage type thing, except I didn't actually use camo. No one seemed to get the paint except maybe TM though. All said and done, I should rebuild it and put Coleslaw's paint on it. That's a very similar design now that I think of it.

EDIT

That's more words than I expected. Maybe I should become a communist.

Hexagonal > Coleslaw (come at me Jackson w/e though you'd probably agree since you seem to like Hexagonal a lot)

I stand by my opinion on the paint.

Grats on winners.

Gentleman

You think black men can't be gentlemen, is that it? You fkn racist fkrs. Always putting the black man down. I hope you all get run over by a hot wheels train. God damn white people.

Land Baby

Kak misread the name Landsby as Land Baby while playing through story mode in Soul Calibur II, this inspired me to make a baby. Entertainingly enough, there is a painting known as The Land Baby that was discovered by nob because of this. I will print it and frame it, then place it on my bathroom wall right in front of the toilet.

You're all gay.

Congratulations everyone who got involved for another fun ACDC, and a big thanks to TM for hosting it. Another great batch of designs that were a lot of fun to go over. At the time I was wrestling with competing in the Street Fighter VSGC, preparing bots this ACDC and a busy schedule, I'm glad I put as much effort as I did to make some nice bots that I am happy with while earning some top spots.

I'm really enjoying the self write-ups, its great hearing the story behind the bot. So here's mine.

Behind the Bots

Erasure

The first MoA bot I started on, I stuck very close to Nombot aesthetics with this one, I was pleased with how it turned out. I knew I wanted to make a quad, then came the back missiles and energy sniper rifle which both decided the overall paint scheme of the AC. This is the first bot that I viewed pictures of from TM and I was immediately happy with the results, I thought it would do better in the voting but the competition was pretty steep in this division, oh well. I feel the strongest aspect of the design is how much texture is present, giving off a detailed technical look, and of course the green highlights on the head and rifle that contrasts well with the purple.

FOG X

This design had began as a work in progress when designing for ACDC 2.0. Work on the design revolved around the two back cannons and a strong desire to utilize those weapon arms. I named it after the FOG team arena bots as PD and Keanu pointed out, as I always remember thinking how cool they looked, but I did not use them as a reference while designing other than the fact it reminded me of them. I incorporated my favorite aspects of 1st gens look, a tall lightweight with a strong upper torso and shoulders, as well as using another set of 1st gens well designed weapon arms. Designing for this one went pretty fast compared to my other entries, the only moment of deliberation came when deciding the color scheme to fill in the regions that were not white and grey. I just went with my old maroon palette standby after experimenting with many colors, the blue accents fit in nicely without disrupting the rest of the design. As for the red details not matching with back cannons, it looked right when I made it! Doesn't ruin it for me but I'd probably fix it if I had the chance.

After Man

Development for this design went painfully slow with many designs being scrapped in the process. The first thing I finally decided on was that I wanted it to be a hover with those weapon arms, then came the back cannons which I was instantly set on using to match the arms as soon as I scrolled over them. The head, core, and final choice of hovers came naturally after that. During the design process I started feeling that It gave off an alien vibe or something from a different time so i went with it and sort of pushed the look further, inspiring the choice of name. TM basically hit it on the head in his writeup. I also wanted it to look somewhat organic or natural combined with mechanical elements, smooth angles and surfaces hosting artificial technical details such as the vents on the legs. I feel the head couldn't be a more perfect fit, such an odd head that I would normally have a hell of a time fitting on anything else. Also the red visor like highlight on the hovers might be my favorite thing about the bot. To be honest, I wasn't sure how well this one would do when I initially made it, it just seemed too small and didn't have that usual dominant presence and stature that I'm used to working with. I definitely ventured outside of my normal design habits with this one, but I'm glad I stuck with it, it's size and ominous unassuming presence grew on me quickly.

Executive

Another design that took forever to make with multiple overhauls, but I could not be more pleased with the end result. The first AA design I started working with, although I went back and forth working on this and After Man numerous times. The basis of the entire design was to utilize that laser rifle and build around it as best as I possibly could, a task that proved harder than I initially thought. At one point I almost completely gave up on the idea, only to give it another shot after finishing up After Man. I always thought the gun looked great, a prime example of how much detail and personality was put into 2nd gens weapon roster, but that's sort of the same reason that made it difficult for me to work with. Depending on how you approach designing, It can heavily dictate the rest of the frame choices in terms of color and shape. The gun has basically has its own full paint scheme and a variety of shapes and angles, finding frame parts and colors to match all that was a process. The two back units were natural choices that I felt worked well right away, the rockets and arm rifle look like they were made for each other with the dark blue, red highlight and patterned holes. The back laser cannon while working with the rifle also opened up new doors with its white paint which led into the extensions and shield, everything still sporting red highlights to go with the rifle. The core featured that desired boxy look as well as diagonal markings and patterned holes. The legs were tough at first, until I landed on those RJ's which were always a favorite of mine, every other leg made the design look boring, these RJ's had the perfect line pattern for the red highlights and patterned hole indentations, also the fact that they are RJ's instantly add interesting form to the design. The arms were a big moment for me, for the longest time I was using a larger set, but I'm glad I decided to reconsider because once I landed on these with my newly configured paint-scheme there was no turning back. Their small size and detail allows them to blend in appear to be one with the extensions and left arm shield, pushing a heavily technical look. Deciding the head was the final part, for most of the process I had the Dome head equipped, the head that I ended up with fits the tone better and features more patterned holes. Anyways my favorite aspect that I'm most pleased with is how much detail is present on the design, and how much there is to look at all while nothing seems out of place. Also I was happy with the red line highlights showing up at just the right places at all the right angles. The name is basically just as PD said "This thing looks effective and expensive, so I guess the name is fitting; reminds me of Omega watches". Man, this ended up pretty long, but there was a lot to say!
