Welcome to ACU's first Armored Core Design Contest. This ACDC will be focusing on Armored Core: Silent Line and participants must only use parts that are in AC:SL. This means you cannot enter a design that uses any Armored Core: Silent Line Portable only parts, though you may use your AC:SLp game to design your AC. This is because no original part stats, appearances, or mechanics were changed between the two games.

Participants are encouraged to be creative with their designs and paint, but to remember that utility and usability of your design are still highly important. All AC's submitted will be displayed for voting. There are three catagories that ACU members can vote on for in this ACDC. These catagories are Utility, Usability, and Creativity. Utility is a measure of the AC's overall competitive ability and design ethics. Usability is a measure of how easy the AC is to pick up and play, regardless of competitive power. Creativity is a measure of how interesting and entertaining an AC's parts and paint schema are.

The cut-off date for design submissions is Tuesday, August 10th, 2010 at exactly 2:00 AM Central Time (-06:00 GMT).

The submission period has ended. No more AC submissions will be accepted.

After the cut-off date, all submissions will be posted as a reply to this topic and then the topic will be opened for voting. Once the AC submissions are posted, each member may cast their vote for which AC will win which category. Members can vote for the same AC in every category or a different AC per category. There will only be one winner for each category, as well. No second place winners here. Members who cast a vote are encouraged to provide commentary on the AC's they vote for, but are not required to.

You must PM me your design to have it entered into the Design Contest. Please use the design template provided in the spoiler tags at the bottom of this post for the PM. You can just highlight the template, copy it, click the link in this paragraph, and then paste it into the PM. It should maintain the formatting. After that you just fill in the template, title the PM "ACDC Submission", and then click the "Send" button. You may re-submit your design if you change something up until the cut-off date, but not after.

Rules:

  • Each contestant may only enter one design into the contest.
  • You must use the provided template for your design submission.
  • Your design may not use the following parts: OP-I, MG-800, SRFL-70, Solid Side Shields

Happy Birthday LS!

Time to rate our contestants!

When voting, remember to consider which AC you believe should go in which category carefully. If you have good reasons for your decisions, post them along with your votes. It helps everyone understand why you picked what you picked when you provide some reasons. Don't forget to open the AC's full design statistics that are inside of the spoiler tag under its image. There's also a short description in the spoilers to help you better understand the AC and its use, so be sure to read it all!

If you're confused about what the categories stand for, read on. Otherwise, skip to the next paragraph. The Utility category is for AC's that pack the most competitive power. This category is for designs that may be difficult, but not unrealistically difficult to use, while being exceptionally good at handling the metagame of this AC game. This doesn't mean that they must be difficult to use, though. Only that they are very adept at competing at the highest tiers of PvP combat. The Usability category is for AC's that are the easiest to use. This category is for designs that are easiest for new or unskilled players to pick up and utilize, so things like a lot of energy with a high rate of recharge, high cooling, large lockboxes, and other newbie-friendly features are important. These designs don't need to be highly competitive, just easy to pick up and play. The Creativity category is for AC's that are highly entertaining in either their design, paint scheme, or both. This category is for designs that focus on using underused part combo's and highly eye-catching and pleasing coloring. While a design may be difficult to pilot and incapable of competing at the higher tiers of PvP, it may be interesting in concept and fun to play. This is the category for that kind of AC.

Voting closes on Monday, August 16th, 2010 at exactly 2:00AM Central Time (-06:00GMT).

Do not vote for your own design in more than one category!

-------------------------

Voting has closed for this ACDC and the winners of each category have been decided. There was a lot of fun guessing as to who made which AC, some entertaining voter manipulation, great discussion about Silent Line, and very good design diversity. I hope you all had as much fun as I did!

Anyway, here are our contest winners.

Description:

This AC has 9114 AP, 1935 solid defense, and 1844 energy defense. It also has 368 ground and 286 air boost speed, faster than an ORDER mid with MARE boosters for less drain. Having no back weapons to cycle through increases the decoys' ease of use. The weapon combo has high damage per second and causes the enemy to overheat quickly. This setup kills BEE|IKS|CASK|D3TA frames, the most defensive possible, with ammo to spare. Optional parts increase the AC's defense, maneuverability, and missile defense, while also maximizing lockbox size for further ease of use.

Description:

This AC would be better off if I switched the legs to MGHS, because then I could use TIN as well as add another weapon if I wanted one. I just prefer SNSK due to both aesthetic tastes and because I don't like how slow I move with MGHS/TIN. I don't like piloting slow AC's, even if it's bad for me. I didn't use YIV/A10 because I have the weight for the added defense that BEE gives and YIV/A10 didn't speed me up any. I'm also using SRA02 because it gives a large buff to my lock range for use with the missiles. WS-1 reduces my ranges drastically, and WS-3 is slightly better for a larger lockbox vertically.

Description:

This AC is made to capitalize on the massive lockbox of the MG-500 for use with the XCWL-60, which the MG-500 compliments fairly well. It works best at mid range; the tight bullet spread of the MG-500 makes it an ideal candidate as far as MGs go, giving me the freedom to fight from further out. ELIX allows for steady fire if the need to rush arises. This design is equally viable from close or mid range, and can take to the air easily due to the combination of ELIX and the RJ's stationary jump.

#1: The frame on this is solid. It's the weapon set where it goes horribly wrong. The ND lockbox for the main weapon is bad enough, but couple it with an SW FCS and a left arm unit which can't even make use of the range, and it just feels clunky and generally outclassed by all sorts of things. Lots of things snipe better than this AC, lots of things joust better than this AC, and lots of things have an easier time playing "close range keep-away/opportunity shots." It's just heavily outperformed by range specialists at every conceivable range, and by more standard omnirange weapon sets at most ranges. R30 always bugs me also, since it's so heavy compared to R24, and so weak compared to the only-slightly-heavier R36. In fact, R36 fits as-is on this AC. In further fact, R36, ICICLE, and DD20 make this AC perfect weight. Not that that is the ideal thing to do to this AC, but it would certainly improve it considerably. I really don't understand why the designer of this AC left it so underweight. Nor do I understand why there are three empty option slots, which could be used to fit CLPU or ECMP, the former of which, at least, would greatly benefit this AC. The paint is below average: the shade of gray you've chosen doesn't go well with the main blue, which is sort of a boring shade anyway, and the pure black is just tacky. In fact, that describes this entire AC (excluding the frame) very well: tacky. Not really a bad AC by the standards of this contest, but it's uninteresting, sloppily designed, and pretty far from being high tier.

#2: I quite like this one, as I always have. Excellent ranged support for the SAWA, and a solid platform for it. CE on the OPs is the closest thing to an eyebrow-raiser here, but I suppose if there were ever a time to use CE over CND it would be with the SAWA, haha. The lack of paint is slightly disappointing, but it does give the AC a very clean feel. Again, that word describes the entire AC well: clean. Perfect weight, highly effective while also somewhat unusual and stylish, and pretty great all around.

#3: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA

#4: I like this one as well. It feels just a tad underequipped, though, like it could potentially suffer against more defensive-minded ACs, especially those which are fast enough to avoid its orbits. It could potentially be worthwhile to sacrifice some defense for increased offensive ability, in the form of support missiles or a larger handgun. Then again, the current setup is very durable for its weight, and in the right hands it should be able to do enough damage as well. I raised an eyebrow at the lack of deeks, though. It seems like your weapon set's limited damage potential forces you to make offense your priority when moving, and having to lose the potential for a bit more heat damage in order to avoid a missile manually seems like it would be bad times. Again, it could be worthwhile make a frame sacrifice or two in order to fit deeks. The paint is alright, but overall the colours seem a bit overbright to me, and the arms and core seem to clash. It's a decent AC, but it just plays it a bit too close to the line for my taste.

I'll rate the rest and vote tomorrow, I shouldn't be doing this when I'm so tired.

EDIT: I might come back and rate these in more detail at some other time, but I just don't feel up to it now, and I no longer have the game in front of me to play with the builds. I typed up full ratings for most of the remaining ones, but my browser deleted them. =( I'll go ahead and vote, though.

I considered voting for 12 for Creativity, but being a competitive-quality AC is sort of a prerequisite for creativity in my book: you have to create something that has value in the game. 12 is right on the very absolute line of being competitive, and I probably would have voted for it if 2 hadn't been in this contest. Utility was a pretty easy category to decide; not much else in this contest is even in the same tier as 7, although 13, 2, 6, 5, and even 4 are all good. Usability was a category I didn't really understand. I assumed it meant big lockbox, simple weapon set, low drain, good def-speed ratio, and no glaring weaknesses in terms of 'counter' ACs. Other than 6, 5, 11, 13 and 2 also made strong showings. I think 13 would take third in every category, if I were to rate all of them fully; it and 2 are really great ACs, and my favorites in this contest, although 13's legs could be better, and it probably has a few other minor issues that I would find if I were to break it down in-game as I did the first few.

Utility: Design #7

This was a tough call for me, but it seems fairly well-rounded and that GNL fucking punishes. MG-500 and HGL is almost hard not to kill with, so it has that to its credit as well.

Usability: Design #11

This just seems pretty easy to pick up and play to me. The weapon setup is straightforward, the speed is manageable and the defense is adequate.

Creativity: Design #1

It just looks pretty.

Hoversawa was definitely a runner up for utility, though. I could see that being scary-good if used right.

EDIT: Changed my mind; Design #1 for creativity in place of design #12. Once I saw it a little more clearly (as in, not in the early hours of the morning), the colors just seemed to clash.

A lot of these bots have nice names!

Utility: Design #7 - A prototypical AC3 quad (which actually isn't so good in SL), but I don't really see anything that's much stronger in the straightforward sense in this particular ACDC. The left hand gun choice wasn't so great, but it's not so bad either. I'll note now that in general I don't see too many bots that could really be dominant in a high-level tournament in this ACDC, except one (more on that later).

Usability: Design #11 - The standard OB midweight for the SL period. I must have seen like 10-12 of this exact bot just at MOC4, and there was a reason for that. 066 was the more popular legset by the end of SL period, though.

Creativity: Design #12 - It's one of the few bots that made interesting (and wise) choices on the weapons, and it has the right part choices to maximize on some of the perks of said weapons. Namely, low drain and ray's OB. I have to be honest, too, I think this might be the only bot that could win a high-level tournament. It's got solid fundamentals as well as a few little tricks to push it over the top.

If there was an Overall Winner category, it most certainly would be #12. Lots of good designs, but not much great.

EDIT: I just realized how bad the defense is on #12, so I had to reevaluate my opinion on it some.

I'm kinda torn on how to vote for creativity category. On one hand, creativity could mean finding a certain niche or means to defeat or surprise an archetype in a current metagame. On the other hand, it could mean just slapping on novel shit. Your creativity category also encompasses paint, which has nothing to do with forwarding a competitive environment. :P

First and foremost, I like design 4's paint the best. The color scheme is very sleek and reptilian looking-- which matches the AC's sleek frame perfectly. The changeup of green hue on the arms is a very nice touch, and makes for a very reptile texture like feel.

UtilityDesign #7. It's very boring and dull, but its competitiveness and versatility is pretty high-- although it could be done a bit better. The left handgun doesn't really break the design, but it most certainly doesn't make it either. I do feel like it could at least use a spam and drop type of missile setup for back slot and extensions, so it could at least get an ap advantage more of then not, or at least put them on their toes in order to set up a nice first gl shot.

UsabilityDesign #11. It's extremely boring and dull, a typical archetype of Silent Line. It is also probably the most failsafe as well, with very spammable weapons and plenty of energy reserve. Dual missiles with r24 provide a very easy to use and highly dependable missile setup, while hzl50 is very lightweight and is good at multiple ranges as pressure and raw damage.

CreativityDesign #12. The heavy RJs provide great agility when in pinch (especially thanks to its hopping prowess.) The plasma cannon takes off 1000ap per shot, and has a really fast reload. This AC seems like the type of AC that would really fuck up some players if not taken seriously. Its shell defense is decent, but very low energy defense. A move to Bee head and 004 legs are best bet.

Utility: Design #7 Grenade launcher quads are what got me through some of the ticker missions in AC3 up through LR. They work. Kinda boring paint though.

Usability: Design #11 Very similar to my main AC in SL. I have a lot of fun playing these, spam spam spam! ('Cept I is a plus monkey and use cannons) I think the paint could have been done better.

Creativity: Design #2 Never even crossed my mind to use the Sawa on a hover. I have no idea what this ACs strengths or abilities are. It will be fun to find out. IMO the silver paint works nicely.

On a side note I like design #5 and #13 paint jobs.

#12's total defense number is a bit skewed. It has mw caliber shell defense, but lightweight caliber energy defense. When I made it to test it out, the numbers were 1670/1400 or something. It better hope it doesn't run into energy weapons! Bee/004 brings it up to 1700/1600 with exact same weight and handles, but a slight loss of ap, drain and cooling.

I really think #5 should've used orbits and rm20 instead. That way it can secure early ap advantage and drop parts for speed/drain boost.

Utility: Design #07

Punishes AC who uses SA44 (which is 90%). Overall, very generic.

Usability: Design #06

I chose this design because it can soak up a lot of punishment, move very quickly, has a decent hand combo, and has low a OB and booster drain. It would have been even easier to use with the RF160/SRFL50 combo. While #11 is more competitive, #6 is definitely easier to use.

Creativity: Design #03

:P :P :P :P :o :P

No ORCA representation is a shame. :o

#5 has the most godly handhelds in history, though!

His bot is so dope, huh? Fuck.

I was just surprised that we both had the same design (he even uses GSL72) except for my MG1000, unless he used a different radiator and optional parts. The ORCA design was my second choice to put in the contest.

Ut - 2

Fast and SAWAful

Us - 11

It's a biped with MG and missiles

Cr - 12

It has the most creativity votes and isn't 3.

My votes use a vertical template because it's superior. More detail later, or maybe I'll be like LS and say I'll do something then not do it.
