Mom
I want to get back to fundamentals, so I've decided to start a new routine exercise every weekend. What I'll be doing is taking a completely blank photoshop canvas and throwing random color on it with no plan whatsoever until I get something readable, then try to make a scene out of it-- all within 45 minutes. This will be an ongoing series and hopefully I'll be able to see progress as I complete each new one. Here is my first attempt: (click for larger size) http://i.imgur.com/8Wo83aJ.jpg Full list of 45 Minute Series: http://i.imgur.com/8Wo83aJ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/4GFGCUj.jpg http://i.imgur.com/XGFUhFk.jpg http://i.imgur.com/aE6eK3h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/v3M4rWy.jpg http://i.imgur.com/NuihCA0.png http://i.imgur.com/LHSRASE.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Pj55PVO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/LPHUQTB.jpg Edited March 7, 2014 by POSTER X
Ataraxis
This sounds like a pretty cool idea, and I like the first result. I really like what you did with the colour. That overhang is pretty crazy, haha. Where did you start?
Mom
I literally just took a lot of blue and then some dark reddish-brown and then some lighter blue and went from there. I was kinda hoping to make a dark, grungy, misty place that wasn't so elevation oriented but I got this instead. Clones
Man that's beautiful. A little village in the mountains. And you did this in 45 minutes? That's awesome man!

Nomrah
Nice work, It's good to see you post one of your landscapes and I'm really liking your "exercise" idea, I hope to see more. Landscapes and backgrounds are something I have minimal experience with so its always very cool to see someone else engaging in it.

Mom
Another day another entry! Starting from here out I'll post what it looks like after 5ish minutes where I begin to see forms out of the color. Ataraxis told me to do something out of purple and green so I did that. I kinda don't like parts of it but whatever, must keep trucking! http://i.imgur.com/tK4um6u.jpg http://i.imgur.com/4GFGCUj.jpg
Ataraxis
I like the sky and the mountains, and the foreground. If anything, it's sort of the middle area I dunno how I feel about. I think it's pretty cool overall, though.
Mom
The sky and background are good to me, the colors are decent, the foreground needs some design changes because I don't like its symmetry. The miasma marshe looking middle-ground is ok in my books, but I don't really like what's going on in the left and right of the middleground. If I could do it over again I'd go back and change that. Ataraxis
Yeah, the left and right on the middle-ground are what weakens the area for me. I can see your point on the two sides in the foreground being symmetrical, though I don't have an issue with it. Maybe if the trees were more of a different height from each other, and one side of the path opening was more hill-ish than cliff like? Though I do like how it looks like the path was carved into it. Mom
Symmetry can always be good, but it can also be a case by case thing. I wouldn't know what I'd want to do with the foreground unless I re-did it. The weak middleground is definitely a bottleneck for the landscape, especially since the middleground is usually the selling-point of the painting. What annoys me the most in the second painting are the stone spires in the middleground, they're not very well conveyed and have a bad push-pull factor. This is all a learning process though, and I will try to remember my mistakes from the previous attempts and correct them on the next attempts. Mom
I took the beginning part of that last painting as loose inspiration and saw something in it akin to a water environment, so I used that as my starting point for this piece. I saw something dark, taint and misty, shrouded by water, but I ended up getting something that was much more cold and industrial. http://i.imgur.com/mMMihUW.jpg http://i.imgur.com/aE6eK3h.jpg Edited October 10, 2013 by The OB Express
Nomrah
That's probably my favorite one in here so far, very cool locale. I can just imagine the history, what it might've looked like before, and the possibilities on what all could've gone down there.
Clones
I mistook that one for a snowy environment initially, upon closer inspection I realized it was a water one. Nicely done though! I liked the little detail you added in that... broken wooden thing in the water. I'm with you on this one Nomrah, my favourite so far as well. Mom
Well it is icy and watery, so I guess snowy isn't too far off. I think this one's worth another look later on, maybe a different perspective for a better dynamic composition and maybe see what I can do given 2-3 hours. I gotta eventually make a 10,000 resolution print by December anyways.
Mom
My structural strokes are not so good. Must improve. Also perspective conflict with background and buildings. http://i.imgur.com/jjt4iqn.png http://i.imgur.com/v3M4rWy.jpg Edited October 13, 2013 by The OB Express
Nomrah
I don't know, I might like this one even more than the previous one. The color and the lighting, as well as the sky. Yeah its definitely the lighting that has me hooked on this one. Also this one has the most immersive qualities imo, I feel like I'm there looking upon the scene. Structures seem similar to the ones in the freezing water locale, possible connection?
Mom
Nope no connection, just a lack of creativity on my part hahaha. Plus when I rush through a painting with structures I tend to end up with those kinds of buildings anyways. I think once I get ten of these things done I'll go back and redo each one with another 45minute time limit, to see if I can improve them. I think the main benefit that time around is that I'll be entering the paintings knowing pretty much what I want to do. Nomrah
Sounds good, I'd be interested to see what changes you might make after another 45 minutes.
Mom
No it won't be an additional 45 minutes on top of the original 45 minute paintings, just a complete do-over but using pretty much the same scenery. It's a good opportunity to step back and think about the paintings for a bit in pure fundamental terms, to see what works and what doesn't and solve those issues. The additional refinement might come a good bit later when I select only a couple that I like.
