This bot made me wish they had a KanColle personification of US ships. Perhaps in the future. (*´・ω・)

1 Jagdkommando

this should be renamed to SCUTTLE SHUTTLE THE REVENGEANCE since i mean its basically scuttle shuttle with scuttle shuttle ideas only executed way better in just about every way especially because it looks badass. id prob choose diff missile launcher cuz the color is too close but not close enough and the shape is unfitting. nade launcher has good shape to match rest of the ac tho. also the paint from the back looks great compared to the paint on the front

2 After Man

id rly like if this AC were split up into two different ACs because basically theres 2 decently strong concepts strapped together with staples and scotch tape and the end result looks mediocre at best. basically the arms and back units work fantastic with each other and the frame looks quite nice, but together they dont match at all and cant even be saved by the idea of contrast because the colors that were chosen were not applied correctly. if the legs were red id be more inclined to call this a stronger ac

3 R.E.D.

id like to say at least u tried but i cant even say that

4 WALL-E

omg dis robit looks amazeballs and its even loosely related to WALL-E which makes it cute but not too cute because its a tank with a grenade launcher and a sniper rifle. in fact its very canon to the WALL-E universe and its the main reason why the humans left earth in the first place. The one u see in the movie just got amnesia which made him horny for SEARS appliances and then he lived happily ever after with the humans UNTIL HE REGAINED HIS MEMORY. THE GRITTY REBOOT

5 USS Revenge

so like apparently theres like 7 naval vessels named USS Revenge in the usa so this is probably alluding to that i guess? looks like a naval vessel with the radar head and hover legs and the paint is very navy-ish. the orange in the legs couldve had less saturation to look more like lights than what they look like now so its sorta distracting. altho u can see in the arms near the shoulders that those squares look like flashlights, so maybe the leg details werent supposed to look like lights and the designer just went ham on the detail colors. overall the part choice on this ac is super solid tho and the paint is great except for a few unsavory choices

6 land baby

PEDOBEAR 2.0 IN DISGUISE AS AN INFANT SO HE MAY ACQUIRE SWEET BABY JUICES omg dats gross i dont think i shud have said that

7 Froggy-Fatlegs the Commando Ninja

its like

its like some super fat cosplayer trying to cross cosplay gundam with TMNT only hes one of those cosplayers that only uses bodypaint

hes also 47 years old

8 Executive

very very solid choice of colors and parts but i think that the colors overall are a touch too dark. my favorite part about this ac is the use of that head though; thats what really pulls this ac through imo. but ya too dark and that arm shield is ugly and out of place

9 Foot Patrol

the colors are fantastic on this ac and even the weapons match each other but they dont exactly match the frame, so it makes the equipment still look like separate parts on an ac but its consistently made. only thing keeping me from liking this bat is the core or the arm choice. i think either a smaller core or fatter arms would make this ac more balanced because as it is right now i dont really like that part

10 Chrome Dome

it looks like the dome tried to be chrome but they forgot to chrome it because its a dull purplish gray. not very chrome and stuff and the frame is a very nice shade of purple but the whole robit is too damn purple or something. the weapon choice is not very strong (those extensions are atrocious). basically my favorite part about this ac is the frame choice. this ac looks like one of the negatively ranked secret ACs youd see in AC2 or something but its still one of those ACs that suck really bad.

11 Smithereens

its solidly made but like its pretty boring and leaves a lot to be desired in the paint department. playing with the arrangement of the colors would have helped this bot a lot more because it just looks too standard to me. great eye for detail but the paint was definitely done after the bot was made and it was far too restricted to the weapon choice. theres no sense of ADVENTURE here

12 Handsome Jack

oh my god it looks like something straight out of bl2 hyperion corporation. its like a super loader claptrap thing that i would love to shoot up. paint was very very well done and i think what makes the paint look so strong is how the leg paint was arranged. it gives off that functionally mechanical vibe to it that goes along with bl2 loaders, and it highlights the red perfectly with those red bolts. same clueless one-eyed stare that hyperion robots have man this thing was constructed well. the name choice leaves something to be desired but it got the point across and i could see handsome jack using this thing. its especially funny too cuz executive and this robot share the same cannon-extension combination, which sort of unintentionally alludes to handsome jacks executive status

1 - Jagdkommando

Looking just at the upper frame, the weapon set, and the paint, this is probably one of the stronger bots in this division. For some reason I don't like those legs even though they fit. To me they just look awkward on a lot of frames but this is probably one of the better applications for them. I still would've picked something else but they work.

2 - After Man

That head/core/leg combo is fantastic and the colours work great and are transitioned really well, but the arm choice doesn't quite work for me. They have such a wide gap, and in combination with the other parts, the bot just ends up giving me an empty feeling. I'm not sure how I feel about the back units either way.

3 - R.E.D.

The combination of, I guess I'll call it red/purple/pink (not quite right but it's messing with my eyes)...well yeah, like I said in brackets, it messes with my eyes. The legs and core work but overall the frame doesn't seem to have any real flow or reason to it. The weapon set ends up looking messier because of it too, though I suppose the rocket is the only thing truly out of place. I think the booster choice is the strongest aspect of this bot because it fits right in with the overall palette and incorporates the blue, which I actually like on the arms as well.

4 - WALL-E

AA actually has some parts that could probably work for WALL-E but I guess this is THE GRITTY REBOOT so that's kind of irrelevant. In chat discussions and such it's been mentioned that the antenna head would have made more sense, and I can agree with that though the head used works well enough with the frame. I like the use of red and green details.

5 - USS Revenge

I like the frame and the weaponry a good bit, and this type of bot is kind of what I was aiming for last contest. It's a tough looking little hover. Paint was where I really struggled, and this is infinitely better, but I still don't think it's amazing. Still, it's well balanced, seems to fit (or help create) the theme, and generally helps tie the whole bot together.

6 - Land Baby

I don't know what a land baby is.

7 - Froggy-Fatlegs the Commando Ninja

Goddamn that's an abstract concept, but it's pulled off pretty well. Something about the white and orange on the arms doesn't work for me, but other than that, the paint is what really drives the theme home. The way the green looks like it's underneath everything and gives the impression that he's wearing armour is crazy and good. The weapons are suitably a bit all over the place. He's trained to use them and ready for anything.

8 - Executive

Technically speaking, I think this is probably the most well execut...ed bot in this division. Actually, I might have a hard time saying we've seen many or any better in that regard.

9 - Foot Patrol

From the front, the arms look a bit mismatched to me, but from the back, I'd pick on the legs. They're obviously both there because of the red striping, which also shows up on the head and core, so I'm not sure what could be done with that. I'd probably say I like the look of the back best, since the upper half looks like it's got wires running through it or something. The paint is solid, though the gold colour could have been swapped out for silver to tie in the weapons with the frame a bit. As a set on their own, they work well enough.

10 - Chrome Dome

I simultaneously like this bot a lot, and don't like it at all. I really don't know what to think here. The purple has a kind of mesmerizing glow to it, but overall the paint doesn't really hook me. The weapons are generally fine, with the exception of the extensions. Those look really off to me. Frame is a bit weird to me too, but it definitely works.

11 - Smithereens

Real solid militaristic look and good fundamentals all around. It does still lack some impact, though.

12 - Handsome Jack

This bot, on the other hand, has impact in spades. The frame is kind of wild yet still super cohesive, and the paint is really unique and well distributed. The weapons are incorporated really well with the use of red details as well as some of the joints wearing that brownish yellow. It's subtle but really effective. To top it all off, the bot is strong thematically.

1st Place: 8 Executive

This entrant checks all the boxes and strikes all the right chords for me. Not only is the paint scheme subtle and sophisticated, but the weapons are brilliantly matched in an unassuming way. I love the the dark, cool hues of the red and blue, which conjure up a feeling of an imposing and uninviting presence to the design, and I like the balance that's struck between the different trim colors. The neutral grays of the weapons and parts of the frame play nicely with the lighter blues. The two-colored detailed colors contrast against each other to make the overall aesthetic much more dynamic and interesting to look at. The darker blue of the core and head serve as a nice transition from legs to the darker blue of the weapons. Build-wise, this resembles something sort of like a crossbreed between Ares and Lionheart of the AC2 arena, taking the strengths of both their appearances and making a super bot. I could literally see this guy as being a top ranker in some kind of AC arena. The striking looks, sophisticated paint-job, and strong narrative I get from it makes this perhaps my favorite bot of the entire contest. It takes all the philosophies that I took behind the idea of Lone Stranger from last contest, and reinforces them beautifully.

2nd Place: 2 After Man

I feel the AA division isn't anywhere as strong as previous contests, and After Man's 2nd place vote from me represents that a little. I don't think it's the most interesting robot aesthetics wise (though very strong fundamentally regardless), but I really enjoy it from a narrative stand-point. Its appearance easily reminds me of some of the ancient tech that you'd see as the form of enemies from the AC2-ACSL era-- specifically the large, floating MTs that had big plasma arms, like the one that split into two on the one AC3 mission or the one that guards phobos on AC2. The gritty texture of the AC2 generation parts really emphasizes this idea as well, making the grayed parts of After Man seem really weathered and worn. This AC might have been once painted vibrantly red and white, but has since aged and patina'd-- the look of an ancient artifact of some long lost society that's only been recently.

3rd Place: 4 WALL-E (The gritty reboot)

I like this AC for many of the same reasons I like After-Man. It has an aged and antiquated look to it that really strikes my fancy. It also has the looks of something that could have been assembled straight out of Disgruntled Bob's Junkyard. Maybe he's the arena partner to Junkyard Dog from last contest (like that one quad and tank from the AC2 arena.) Its design is grounded in good fundamentals, with the rudimentary look of its weapons flowing well with the rugged look of its boxy frame. My only gripe about the look itself is that the treads could have possibly been some color that's slightly off of neutral black; maybe a slightly warmer black to make its treads look more rusted or worn could have served the look better (and I mean very slightly-- anything too extreme would have probably been too blatant and not natural looking.) I don't really feel any attachment to the name Wall-E, gritty reboot or not. I do think it's a funny name though.

Honorable Mentions:

Froggy Fatlegs, Smithereens, Handsome Jack

Jagkommando

Big boxy RJ with semi-camoflage. I guess there's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't strike me as amazing either.

After Man

Interesting shape, though I don't know if I like the legs. From the front it's fine, but they're really short and it makes the side profile a little strange. Strange looking stuff can go either way though, but I can't decide what kind of strange this is.

R.E.D

NOBLU

WALL-E

This isn't working as well as it did in MoA. Color is sort of close, but not an exact match. It's OK, I would have done something else.

USS Revenge

Has nothing to do with the name, other than maybe being a weapon. That's OK. Good frame, interesting color. I also think the weapons really contribute here, along with the ship like radar. Which maybe has something to do with the name. A contender.

Land Baby

Is fat

Froggy-Fatlegs the Commando Ninja

Is also fat. Nuclear color isn't working as well as MoA and the frame is kind of strange looking, but I know what kind of strange and I don't like it all that much. Actually maybe it's just the head I don't like. But I think the head is one of the center pieces of the whole concept. Oh well. I have no taste.

Executive

It's nice looking, a solid frame but the shape isn't super great, just good. It has an interesting color theme, but it's not grabbing me.

Foot Patrol

I like it. I'm not even sure why. The color is kind of neat. The frame is made of parts that might look silly alone (head and legs mostly, this quad has weird feet) but compliment each other well, I guess. I don't know, I made all that up, I just looked at it and thought it looked cool.

Chrome Dome

The legs look weird. It looks like it's supposed to be straight legged, but it's not because it's RJ. The dome is not chrome. Unless the dome is a missile sheild, but then it should be Iron Dome. Or maybe it's Chrome Dome because RJ's can fly like a B-52. It does have high efficiency boosters. SO MANY QUESTIONS

Smithereens

It's OK. Sort of nice frame. Might look better with BARREL legs. Color is a bit drab.

Handsome Jack

I don't play Borderlands 36 the second coming of the original thing before things so I don't know what it is. Looks kind of neat, but also mismatched top to bottom.

I've come to the realization that I dislike the look of AC2 era parts in general, which is why I originally said I wish I could only vote for two.

1- Jagdkommando

This guy isn't terrible but I don't like the core or head. The green looks okay, and that gun probably looks cool on any bot.

2- After Man

A simple and sleek design. Looks nifty, esp the choice of colour placement.

3- R.E.D.

This isn't a problem with some bots but the weapon choice here really hurts this bot cause that large rocket sticks out like a sore thumb. It's like a big ol' nasty tumor just sticking out of the AC. Colour scheme isn't so good either. I don't hate it entire, just dislike some parts of it. Can't place my non-tumorous thumb on it.

4. Wall-E

I like the colours, and it looks okay enough, but I'm really impartial to tanks.

5- USS Revenge

It all comes together for a clean looking bot, but the colours are a little boring to me.

6- Land Baby

Those hover legs are vile and that head will always look ridiculous to me, and always in a bad way. Paint isn't terrible though.

7- Froggy Fatlegs

I do not like the concept, but I like a decent part of the rest of it. Barrel legs aren't doing it for me though.

8- Executive

Same deal with USS Revenge. The guy looks cool enough but not so much that he stands out.

9- Foot Patrol

I like the colours a good deal, and the design is Top Notch. I like it.

10- Chrome Dome

I like this guy. Enough to change my vote, even. Hope that doesn't fuck anything up for TM.

11- Smithereens

The colours are cool. I like that green, anyways. The frame isn't so bad, either. Kinda has an imposing look to him.

12- Handsome Jack

I'd say the best part about this guy is the colour scheme. He's a reference to a game I've never played from a series I do not enjoy, but it's not like that could sway my vote on my aesthetic appreciation of the bot, right?

Again, no full write-ups, just select comments on a few choice bots.

  1. #7 - Froggy-Fatlegs the Commando Ninja: TBH I can't unsee the bear head after Pedobear Assault but otherwise this is pretty fucking good. It's funny, true to its name, and looks very tough desu~
  2. #9 - Foot Patrol: A pleasing color palette and a nicely-executed theme. The head is damn ugly.
  3. #5 - USS Revenge: I don't understand the reference, if there is one, but the design is rather interesting. Seeing a full torso getting truncated on a tank (hover?) is comical at worst, but the head is very much like the bridge of a ship. Damp colors on the legs unfortunately.

Bonus Comments

#1 - Jagdkommando: Yo wat is dis ugly peace off shit its so much worst then Scuttle Shittle i cant even english

#2 - After Man: Interesting piece of junk. I don't know what it was trying to accomplish but I think it could've been cool if you took off the head and used a different core and just made it pure machine.

#6 - Land Baby: This freaky offspring of Pedobear Assault and Pansy bears an unsettling appearance and a sickly hue.

#8 - Executive: I want to like this and I sorta do but not enough to be in top three.

#10 - Chrome Dome: Not very bald. There's the ugly head again which doesn't fit the core or spindly legs at all. I enjoy the color gradation immensely, however.

#11 - Smithereens: LS is right, this guy is reminiscent of Fire Chief but with Sludge Dredd colors. Nice try buddy.
