The Massive Souls Polling Topic

Mom

Recommended Posts

Now that the last DLC for the last Souls game has been released and we've had time to play through it, it's time we reflect on one of the most influential series of modern gaming. For the purpose of the list, we are including Bloodborne with the rest of the Souls games made by From Software. For this topic, I'll be listing a number of top 10s where we can either rank or just list off in no particular order our favorite bosses, enemies, areas, etc, for the series. Providing additional commentary on your choices is welcomed, as is listing even greater than 10 per list. You don't have to provide a list for every category either. All of these lists are purely subjective, you shouldn't list or rate based on how objectively well put together they were, rather, how your experience with each was.

Same, no dlc except oolacile, and no demons

Bosses:

Gwen, cause the hype of most of the game telling you you gotta kill this one guy

Artorious, cool to fight some dude the base game talked about in background

Pontius Sullivan, he had a cool moveset

Prince lothric, a boss where you actually gotta pay attention to where youre hitting. genius

Gundyrs older brother, he was a good fighter

Oceiros dragon, rare to have a boss talk at you which is neat

Lost sinner, i might only like her cause shes gives me the chaos blade

Smoughenstein, why did these two get statues and no one else?

Priscilla, she turns invisible and her tail gives me her dagger

Asylum Demon 2, just cause

Areas:

Izalith, it had my favourite layout

Kiln, lots of ash, pretty cool

Heides tower, the outside bit anyways

New Londo, lots of things go into making this place good

ash lake, big, open, and mysterious

painted world, its linear and fun and gives access to my xanthous coat and pricillas dagger

borealis londo, i dont think this place is as cool until you realize you're in anor londo

the gutter, just cause it really seems like its just one giant trash chute

tsledora, sucks but the boss chamber redeems it a bit

undead parish, great first level, so to speak

Enemies:

Darkwraiths are skeleton men

Stone Lizards had a satisfying hit sound

Silver and Black knights also had a satisfying hit sound and death animation

Capra demon is a boss turned enemy and its cool

Golden lion man from dks2 cause he's one of a kind

Lost Giants were tough but fun to overcome

Outriders from borealis cause they were few and lost and had cool armour

the blue lothric knights with the extra glowy bits

the twin headed green snake in darkroot forest, why does this thing even exist

Alonne knights cause they are like silver knights but not as satisfying

Tracks:

Gwyns

Vendricks

Soul of Cinders

firelink

ashen lake

majula

if i cant remember any others then they weren't that memorable

Weapons:

Crossbow, its a gun in a game full of swords

Chaos Blade, its the best

Priscilla's dagger, 50 bleed and spam

Claymore, i think i had a build that used this a lot

Velkas rapier, cause it scaled like artorius sword but it's a rapier

Standard rapier, i like rapiers cause they are quick, not the extra crit damage

Pronged fork, strong attack

borealis rapier, it had frost dmg

Ricards rapier, fuck another rapier

Notched whip, idk why i used this as much as i did. i liked bleed damage but I doubt I ever inflicted bleed with this thing

NPCS:

Havel the Rock, why is he human sized compared to every other lore type character who is built like a small giant.

The guy with the snipers crossbow that didn't fire like a sniper's crossbow.

Shiva, he had a cool unfinished questline

Oscar, he had a really unfinished questline. the idea of what could have been is what I find interesting.

Siegmeyer is a treat

Aye, Siwmae!

That wheelchair guy from dks2

skeleton blacksmith, his hammer was cool

giant blacksmith, cant believe he died

Anri is my wife.

Armors:

Xanthous Coat

Black Iron Leggings

Wanders Coat

Dingy Robe

Crystal Leggings

Maiden Robe

Anything that resembled these was probably worn until i obtained the real deal. Wasn't a fan of the new xanthous coat

Ambush:

The lower levels of borealis where there's two guardian's but you only see the one at first, christ

Asylum Demon 2, hes just a fun guy is all

Skeleton bridge, goodbye fps

Sens is just a whole level's worth of artificial difficulty

certain areas in new londo when ghosts dogpile you

Artificial Difficulty:

4kings ng+, ptsd

Royal rat dog monster is the worst thing ever

Centipede, unless you run to the other more open area, but why wouldn't you

nameless king, champion of fps drops

borealis dancer, queen of fps drops

I remember dying to dukes dear freja a few times, or maybe that was someone else

Bed of chaos unless you decided to cheat, buy why wouldn't you

Guthix Champion, but this guy was actually enjoyable to fight

Aldritch if he does that one attack, forever

Soul of Cinder, i dont think i even beat this guy, other people did. FPS drops aren't a valid excuse but my whole dks3 experience was ruined so who cares

Annoying Enemies:

Torch Hollows, when they randomly decided to instantly kill you

anything that grabs you

crystal lizards in dks1 where your weapon would hit the wall but not them

borealis bridge dog(s)

the floating exploding skulls in the catacombs

bird men that screamed really loud

fire salamanders in dks2, not sure why these are even a thing

Rats

channeler's teleporting hitbox

the spellcasters after you fight mirror knight.

Hard Areas:

again the area after mirror knight, whatever it's called

painted world, sometimes

izalith prepatch, although I think I only ever watched Chris play that

new londo, but it a good way

Dranglaic castle

Aldias Keep

Dragon Aerie/Sanctuary whatever, fk the later half of dks2, none of it was fun

tseldora was also just garbage

any area in dks3 that had fps drops.

i remember oolacile being hard cause the enemies hit pretty hard

Favorite Spells:

Firesurge, ng+9, dusks crown, max attunement

Now we need Miyazaki's armored souls

Top 10 favorite bosses:

1: Artorias. The game dumps a significant amount of lore around him as you play through it. When you fight him in the DLC you get to see first-hand his tragic situation as it's unfolding in the past. As you're fighting him you can't help but feel for the guy and what he's going through. Having him crippled during the fight only makes you wonder just how fucking strong he would be if he was in regular form. The build-up for this boss is great, and the actual fight itself is the right balance of difficulty without being unfair-- took me around 10-12 tries. He has a dynamic moveset that forces you to always vary your timing.

2: Ludwig. The rape horse of Bloodborne also has a large amount of lore surrounding him as you play through the main game. His fight doesn't portray his situation as well as Artorias's did, but nonetheless the experience you get when he transitions into second phase with his moonlight greatssword, accomponied by a dramatic shift in the tone of the music, makes this fight extremely memorable. This is by far the best presentation of the Moonlight Greatsword in entire series, and it's such a memorable experience when you first fight it, because the Moonlight has been in every Souls game, but was never in Bloodborne, until it finally makes its grand experience as Ludwig's true holy blade. Did I mention difficulty? I was on ng+ or ng++ when I fought him, and it took me around 20 tries.

3. Ornstein and Smough. While these guys aren't the original gankers (fuck you, maneaters), the mechanics of their fighting is near flawless, which allows for a very challenging yet completely fair 2v1 fight. Each character's moveset perfectly complements the other, allowing you just enough time to get random swipes in while running for your life. The different 2nd stage depending on who you kill first is a neat gimmick as well. The buildup and surrounding atmosphere of Anor Londo is you make your way to the main room of the main Cathedral is quite the experience as well. From Software has tried many times to make a gank boss after Pikachu and Snorlax, but have never really captured the same glory.

4. Nameless King. When you take the aesthetically most interesting and unique area in Dark Souls 3, and then further intensify it by adding a storm of wind and clouds for its boss fight, then throw in dudes with large weapons riding dragons, you get for one epic experience. Old King is one of the most impressive visual bosses in the entire series, and is also a perfect balance of difficulty. His two forms provide great variety in combat, and his delayed moves make you think really hard about spamming your roll, as he's one of the best roll punishers in the series. I beat him on my 2nd try on my very first playthrough, but in subsequent playthroughs it took me upwards of 10 tries-- proof that this boss is not very easy to learn.

5. Lord of Cinder. This is a final boss done right. I always thought of the Souls series as to have somewhat disappointing final bosses, but the Lord of Cinder delivers on all fronts. Atmosphere? Check. Emotion? Check. Difficulty? Check. Variance? Definitely a check. The twisted environment around him with the solar eclipse in the background is epic, and his multiple movesets that mimic player styles and builds is also very cool. When he transitions into second form and you start hearing the slow melody of Gwyn's theme, along with his Gwyn-like moveset, you're overcome with emotion as well. This is a proper sendoff to the series.

6. Lothric and Lorian, Twin Princes. There's a theme in my listing where I rank the leadup to the bosses very highly. Twin Princes are no different. The climb all the way through Lothric Castle and the Grand Archives, then crossing the heavily guarded last bridge to get to these bosses is a treat. The entire way you're constantly looking to the highest point of the castle, wondering just what the hell Miyazaki has in store for you. The twin Princes might not have the raw difficulty at times of bosses like Nameless king, Mimir, or Gael, but achieve a nice average balance. No matter how much I learn the fight, it always takes me at least 3-4 tries. The teleporting Lorian under the aid of his brother's magic provides a very dynamic fight, and his moveset varies just enough to burn up a lot of your Estus, while 2nd phase adds extra hazards with ranged damage as well. The music during the fight as very dramatic as well, which makes for a grand experience.

7. Slave Knigt Gael. Admittedly, I've never played through the Ringed City, but I did watch a playthrough of it in Full on Maximilian_Dood's twitch. As what's likely the very last boss of the Souls series, Miyazaki and company pulled out all the stops to make for perhaps the most dramatic fight of the entire series. Gael's health bar is huge, and his moveset is super varied. The atmosphere around his fight is really cool, and his 3 phases make for an extremely dynamic fight. Things just get nuttier and nuttier as you progress in this endurance battle. The best part is that it never seems like the fight is unfair.

8. Father Gascoigne. I don't think many people would list a game's first boss in their top 10 list, but Father G is executed so flawlessly that I find it hard not to. For being an initial boss, he has an interesting story surrounding him, with his Daughters and Wife. The mechanics around the fight introduce you to the mechanics of Bloodborne very well, as you'll come to find out that parrying him via your gun, and learning to deal with his blind aggression are skills that will stick with you for the rest of the game. As a werewolf type enemy, he's not the most aspired design, but the fight itself is really fun, and strikes the right balance of difficulty.

9. Abyss Watchers. I never found the Watchers to be a difficult boss, but the idea surrounding the fight is very unique and interesting. Never before have you been thrown into a boss fight thinking you're just one person among a larger, more chaotic fight that's taking place. Every other boss in the series is literally just out to kill you, while the Watchers have been driven mad and are endlessly killing each other, and you just happen to be in the way. I also found it hilarious that the boss is so blood-thirsty, that it even manages to at times aggro on other enemies at the front fog entrance. The 2nd form is a visual spectacle, with the long and varied sword swipes leaving huge trails of fire all around. The music for the fight also does a great job at setting the emotion for the battle.

10. Gerhman. That moment when Gerhman slowly rises from his chair and says he's 'joining the hunt' to murder you will be a memory that sticks with me forever. His fight is such an unexpected twist, and the environment surrounding him is beautiful as well. The field of flowers gives you MGS3 vibes when you're fighting Big Boss, and the track for his fight is so beautifully done as well. His moveset is fast-flowing and varied, leading to a very exhilarating but fair fight. The lore surrounding him and how he is so closely-knit with the story of the entire game is interesting as well. Sadly I don't find this fight difficult at all, thus he ranks lower on my list.

Love me some Slave Knight Gael. Dark Souls 3's intro theme is my fav of the game, and Gael's theme is just one huge fucking crescendo of a very similar melody, getting more intense and epic as his fight gets more intense and epic. Edited by Mom
