So here, in case any of you chuds where looking at buying a knife, is some very good information about knives (serious ones, not show pieces).

First off, the steel.

Alot of people think they know what a good steel is, when you hear that crazy redneck talking about 440C stainless, that's actually like one of the worst blade steels you can get; but it's cheap, so that's why they do it.

Here's the rules

#1. Fixed blades = high-carbon/tool steels (1095, A2, D2, O1, INFI)

#2. Folding blades = high-quality stainless (CPM-S30V, ZDP-189, VG-10, AUS-8, D2)

Some steels are better at holding or taking the edge, some get sharp easy, some get dull easy; each manufacturer heat-treats their steels differently. So Cold Steel doesn't heat treat AUS-8 as well as Spyderco, but oh well; any good steel can do what any steel tool is intended for (use against things that are softer than steel); a few like INFI can cut lesser steel with little/any damage, but they cost anywhere from $300 for a little shiv, to $1000 for a large knife/sword.

Good manufacturers are important to keep in mind: Becker/Kabar, RAT (Randall's Adventure Training, i.e. Rowan), Spyderco, Fallkniven, etc.. are all good, Cold Steel is popular (and for a reason) but they are kinda hit-n-miss. Cold Steel makes good cheap knives, good knives as weapons, but they don't make generally high-quality utilitarian/bush knives.

Edges

If you want a heavy use knife, go with Convex edges, they last the longest.

Everything else, go with what will work well between in-mind uses and the sharpening it will require.

Handles should all be Micarta, Micarta rules your dreams when it comes to knife handles.

Sheaths are important to think about as well, a razor sharp bit of steel can get a bit pointy.

That's all for now, just wanted to do something.

These are the knives I use most often, a Gerber with a 2 1/2 inch half-serrated blade and a Kershaw 2 inch assisted-open blade.

I don't usually like half-serrations but since this is the knife I usually carry around with me I figured the serrations would look a little more intimidating if I have to whip it out. The nub on the back opens the knife most of the way so a flick of the wrist at the same time will open it in one motion with one hand.

I've had this knife for quite a while and it's the one I use the most. It's spring-assisted opening so pressing the nub on the back will snap the blade out and locked very quickly. Everyone thinks it's a switchblade when I use it, haha. It's small and light so it's great for everyday tasks like opening envelopes and packages.

I've got a big collection of knives but these are the ones that are usually in arm's reach.

Kabar ain't bad, but I think they're crap compared to Becker's stuff they produce.

Becker set a really good standard for 1095, and IMO only RAT/Rowan is on the same par with their 1095; 1095 being an almost ideal high-carbon steel for a tough use knife.

Right now I have 2-3 multitools I can't locate, my Horton Blood EDC which is super nice (finally got a sheath), and I picked up a Cold Steel Rajah II, if the AUS-8 holds out well, this will be a great knife IMO.

A $20 sheath I picked up, serves the purpose.

I never got Karambits, they seems kinda silly because you miss out on something that can stab, which is what knife fighting really centers on.

There's a ton of people who think knife-fighting can be trained like some martial art, and perhaps it can, after years of work; but the "oh shit" factor of a real "knife fight" will probably reduce training into a nice afterthought and heavy blows.

Whatever though, my inner OPERATOR talking again.

Zero Grinds are weak, Convex Grinds are the rage son.

Emerson makes nice stuff, just too pricey, Spyderco is my favorite folder brand (S30V Paramil = tits).

But my plan is to get some of the newer RAT ESEE knives, RAT makes great knives, 1095 is great steel and Rowan does a tremendous job heat treating, sheaths are solid, handles are great, price is nice even. That and a few Spyderco Paramilitary folders, and some other misc. shit and I'll be all happy on the edged weapons front, until they come out with a knife that uses Aluminum/Scandium alloy, which would be pretty bonkers (make for great small knives, but nothing in the chopper sense due to lightweight).

I'm down with belts!

The one guy, uhh Saito, remember how he fucked Kenshin up with a belt during their fight in the tv anime? That was so dope. What a great fight.

A lego belt could be good to fuck someone up with, cuz it would explode like an AC1 era bot once it hits the guy. So good.
