A while back I came up with another SEV sniper quad that happened to be the same design as someone's AC called Midnight (Sev, Ray, SRF/60). After tinkering a bit more and watching an old tournament video from AC3, I had the idea to drop the booster to the E9 to fit the 008 and it actually worked quite well. Basically just empty the GNL quickly and then try to play range control. You can basically stay in the air forever with the E9, or just do long OBs and pick away with the SRF.

The only thing that's really up in the air is the head choice. Skyeye kinda sucks here because it's in the same defense bracket at the Tie and it's drainier with a worse radar, but WS-3 fits that way. 003 is probably too drainy and the radar is pretty bad. 008 can't fit. I was actually considering using the VEN here too. The defense breakpoints work out really well (if that's possible with the VEN), the drain is about the same as the Skyeye, the radar is nice and, well, it would be cool to make the VEN actually work on a serious design.

Let me know what you think =)

  2. Thanks man. Great post.

I agree that SEV quads outclass WIZ quads in most ways, but I like this AC a lot, and not just because it makes use of underused parts. It plays quite differently from a SEV quad for two reasons. First, it's much faster because of the weight cap. Running around at 430 km with the GNL and 500 without is pretty cool. Also, 145 turning is pretty cool with the HG/HZL combo, ray and 500 boost speed.

Not saying it makes it good, but definitely plays much differently than other quads.

I agree that there's very few ACs with dropping the HZL against, which is why I was considering dropping down to the dd/10 for using in the beginning as overweight. I'm thinking like vs VM40/R36 or OC15/R20 spam and drop.

M/AW is just on there because the BRK seems equally useless. Dunno what else I'd do with ops.

Thanks again. Wish I could always get feedback like that lol

  3. Here's the end result of a bunch of tinkering trying to make a Wiz/GNL quad work.

    Eas

    Wiz

    Mare

    WS-1

    Roz

    SA44

    DD/20

    GNL

    -

    HG-80

    HZL-50

Screens, stab, CND, LFCS, M/AW, INIA

There's a few small adjustments that work well too so I'm not entirely decided. I had the 008 head, Gull and WS-3 on there for a while, but the defense breakpoints work out better with the 003 and upping the booster to the MARE compensates for the extra drain a little. 008 head/002 booster works too; still fast but way less drainy.

Overally I really like it though. GNL is pretty nasty on an AC this quick and the WIZ's 145 turning works well for getting in close with the HG/HZL combo. Ammo is a bit of a problem though. The DD/20 is dropped most of the time but the HZL is dropped instead vs missle boats or anything with a really nasty combo. In that case, you'll have to be really careful with ammo. Vs spam-drop-missles you can just deal with the overweight until they're done and then drop them. DD/10 might be a better idea for this though.

Anyway, it's a lot of fun to play and seems to work pretty well.

  4. ^yeah it's solid. I was gonna run that same design exept with misteye/UN8 instead of YIVA10/Fleet, but I don't really like running the exact same weapon combo on 2 ACs (same as the last AC I posted). Good design for sure though.

@Niji - I agree #2 is best, but SRFL/70 is usually banned right? I know it was in MOC4. Guess it shouldn't matter since I'm obviously not playing in any tournaments - but in that case might as well slap MG/800 on there haha.

I kind of like #3 actually because rachis looks cool and is pretty hard to work onto a decent AC. I guess I could use the rachis with #2 also though.

Also thinking all these versions are so incredibly cookie cutter that I might just scrap it and try to make something odd work, like ROG or GROA or rarely-used weapons. All my other quads seem a lot more fun than this.

  5. All perfect weight - maybe I have OCD or something =P

    YIV | 008 | Hadro | Knot

    Fleet | WS-1 | Roz | Sa44 | DD/20

    Rachis | 008 | Hadro | Knot

    UN8 | WS-1 | Roz | Sa44 | DD/20

    - | - | GNL15 | RF150 | SRF50

Not particularly creative, I know. First two are pretty much the same with different weapon combos. 3rd one is lower drain. I guess it's mostlys preference but I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

    well...merry christmas...

  6. 005 is frogger legs right?

Uhh I think so. The high defense, 4116 weight cap ones. 1st quad on the list.

I really like that hand gun/sniper combo in SL, if your not playing competition and just want more power equip the SRFL70, it's alot stronger.

Yeah me too. I know SRFL/70 is better but I can't really fit it here and since it used to get banned I try not to use it on too many ACs.

  7. I think the problem is that your designs are pretty solid and any suggested changes wouldn't really be focused around improving the bot as much as aesthetic or playstyle changes. Hence, there isn't too much to say. At most, someone might complain about your head, but since your weight is perfected there isn't much that can be done besdies YIV/A10. I'm fairly certain you can't fit BEE, but not 100% sure. I do recall you wanting to use a different head than your previous AC though.

Yeah I guess you're right. There's not much reason to switch things around. I mostly posted this because I never saw the 005 get any love and I think they can be solid legs with the right set up.

Anyway, I'll post some ACs that I'm toying with more/can't figure out exactly how I want them.

I will say that I'll never understand perfect weighting. If everything you want to fit just happens to fit perfectly that's great, especially since in SL underweighting isn't too big a deal, but I've never made an active effort to perfect my weight.

With this one it was pretty much just that all the parts that made the most sense fit perfectly. In general I guess there's not much reason to, except for feeling like you squeezed that extra 20 or 30 points of effectiveness on. On a lot of designs it seems like there's a dozen little tweaks that don't necessarily make it any worse or better, and if one of those is perfect weight, why not?

    Thanks for the reply =)

  8. 005 or YIV + radar pack = solid choice in SL

Sa77/CR14 (I forget which one is better), but they make a better choice for radiators w/ 008 cores, just because you can spam OB alot more and not have to worry about heat as much.

OB rules SL, so Rogan's advice is retarded, EO's miss everything in SL, while Mirage OB cores can give you a serious mobility advantage.

Also, XSP is crap, just put the weight into a bigger radiator, SL doesn't underweight (much I should say) so it's not going to give you any serious speed

    advantage to drop stuff.

SRFL50 is a solid option for the lefty gun as well, not pressing it as the choice, just saying it's another option.

Agree with everything except the XSP stuff. I can't fit CR14 or SA77 with the BEE. Again, most of the time I'm using DD/20 and dropping the XSP. However, vs the GNL, which is what it's on there for, it's quite good.

    Cheers

  9. A little different as quads go. This is the best I could come up with using the 005 legs.

I love this frame. It hits the shell defense breakpoint perfectly and just barely passes the energy breakpoint. It out-tanks standard knot quads in both departments, and it's significantly faster and more efficient with the 002.

The catch is the LQ/15, which will never be the GNL, but if there's a perfect build to use it with, I think this is it. The HG150/SRFL50 combo is great as always, and fits really well here since this AC is fast enough and durable enough to do some damage up close.

I really wish WS-3 fit, but it doesn't really seem to be a big issue. An alternative build I tried uses HG150, GSL-72 and WS-3, which is only 1 kg underweight. Otherwise I absolutely love how this AC turned out.

Paint Scheme is pretty cool too. I'll edit it in later.

  10. Ok cool. I can't say I participated in any big tournaments or anything, but I just remember seeing some of the strongest designs in the footage and posted on forums and never really saw the bee. In fact, I think the only one was your SVRT design from MOC4 (that was you right?). I saw a lot of Misteye and some YIV or 005 and radar. I think the AC that won the Japanese tourney that's posted on youtube used YIV/A102.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. I'll mess around with the boosters a bit more and I'll post a few of my designs with more original setups and more need for input.

    Cheers

Hmm? But almost every bot ran bee, misteye, or skyeye, quad or otherwise. 008 (or whichever head it was with high AP)+a10 was popular too, but yiv+a10 fell out of style quickly (it fell out back in AC3). For the US side, anyways, I think I played against every big quad player in the country or was at least in frequent contact with them.

Bee and Misteye were the two most popular heads throughout the SL era, for both here and Japan. Perhaps there's a new scene now you're referring to? As far as the one around when SL was the game, what I've mentioned is what was going down. I know that SL still sees action in Japan though, so I'm thinking that could also be what you're referring to.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the design, I'm just saying that I don't think bee sets it apart. I couldn't care less about novelty; strong design mechanics always matters more to me.

EDIT: oh yeah, for fleet vs mare. Either works. It's more or less a preference thing in this bot's case. I'd probably run fleet, myself.

  11. ^Well most good quads seem to use YIV/A10 or misteye, maybe 008 or Skyeye or 005/A10. This quad wasn't meant to be revolutionary, just solid with a twist with the extensions. I'll post something more creative next I suppose.

What do you guys think of MARE vs Fleet on this? They both fit.

  12. XSP is 173, so the only thing that it really drop alternates well with is the dd/20.

I don't know...you're going to drop the dd/20 vs tanks and quads without missiles anyway, and the XSP shaves off about 200 AP loss from a GNL shot. Seems a lot better than nothing vs quads and tanks. I actually think it's a cool/good idea.

  13. Crazy in a good way or a bad way? =P

I actually think it's quite a good idea on this AC. It's better vs most heat than a better radiator, especially the GNL, and it's dropped vs anything with missiles so no harm there.

  14. Well, this is my staple quad for SL. I wanted to make it competitive but not totally standardized and unoriginal. This was the result.

    Mathias-esque paint scheme.

The BEE and the XPS are the main things that set it apart. The coolest thing about this quad is the use of the XSP extensions. These are used in place of the DD/20 against quads and tanks with the GNL and vs any other ACs with heat weapons and no missiles. Using them takes about 200 heat damage off on a GNL shot and they work well vs handguns too. The FLEET fits and I was using it for a while, but I think the MARE is better here, even though the drain is very low for a quad.
