Game Art Designs

Penguin Deus: I hear ya, man. I've been also weighing the option of going indie. I'll see what I do once the script phase is over. Even so, I've been thinking about just starting over fresh with a brand new roster if I ever lose these guys somehow. I've heard the stories, so I'll be as cautious as possible and make sure to read all the fine print and see if I'll ultimately agree to it in the end. We'll see.

noob: True, true. We'll see when the time comes and such.

+++++++++

I've spent the entire weekend studying literature, story-telling, and character development, and I'm still not up to snuff! It's gonna probably take another 2 weeks. In the meantime, I'm brainstorming various plots. At some point, I even thought of going live action{I was probably delirious from over-studying at this point.}

I've been really trying to redesign these characters to be as different enough from the original designs they are based on as possible in order for them to be considered seperate characters, and trying to make the designs be fit for a movie.

Five of these guys will get a lot of screen time, two of them will only have it minimally. The knight has gotten some modifications, he only looks less friendly than before. ONLY looks:

The main roster:

The main antagonist and some of his mooks.

The Lancer and the Big Guy, in terms of tropes:

Possible villain which would lead to a possible sub-plot:

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/f69760aafa4b4a5baff8be1cdf7de8f5/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1343596765000

It's going to be fun trying to make an incredible story.

I remember all the times I forced myself to sit through a story that was considered masterpieces of storytelling by fans. Then my brain protests madly right before it "No, I don't want to watch this, I'd rather do something else, I don't even know what this is going to be, it might be a waste of time!" Then afterwards, "I want more! MORE!" It's funny how the mind works and thinks what your about to watch is undesirable on just initial looks, but then afterwards, you think its the greatest thing you've ever seen. All I know is, no matter how you may perceive a character design at initial glance, a good, well written story will make those characters shine, no matter what you thought about their character design before watching it.

Wow, I thought I was overestimating when I said two weeks and was gonna really be done in a few days, but DANG, I'm glad I've spent nearly all my free time researching. The stories in my mind before now where just GARBAGE!! But now, with what I know so far, I've got some really interesting, nutritional stuff. I'm seeing some really great stories, but they are still not forming right. Looks like I'll actually be studying for 2 weeks afterall!

Heres a "movie poster" I saw before I was even sure what the story and the characters were really like.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/d6dde8eab219454a96dd3a929a41f99f/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1343963896000

And now, just an hour ago, after learning a ton on how to properly tell a story, defining a character, and so on over the course of several days, I finally see this "movie poster" in my mind pop up while jotting some notes down on the story while simultaneously researching the handling of specific elements in story-telling.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/5c0017f01b1f4b07a61999115e57efaf/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1343963903000

It exemplifies what the movie is about while being somewhat misleading! I like it!

Another surprising thing, the Knight's personality started out something too predictable, too bland, too linear, but now I'm finally fleshing out something interesting, something unexpected for a hero of this type. This story is becoming really great, I'm really excited how this is all turning out! Excited indeed! I was also surprised at the roles some of the characters fit into on their own. I think this is going to turn out great. Why haven't I done this sooner!? Learning is fun, FUN, FUNN! /Mad banter

August 6th, I've reached a point where I've learned enough to make something - coherent. The final rewrite felt "perfect" for lack of a better term. Previous iterations lacked well-defined character goals or just had random elements to them that disrupted the flow of the story.

Anyways, once I was done with the final outline, the next step is now the SCREENPLAY. Which I'll probably start on my next day off. After spending the entire day finishing up the general outline of the story, I decided to work on the designs of the characters in the movie. Only had time for Piera.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/c9abf98004f5494a841798b03901f8f6/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1344306383000

The version at bottom on the right fits the Piera from the last rewrite perfectly.

Bleh, I was wrong, the outline still isn't finished, I rewrote it again a few days ago. Anyways, some more movie sketches, I keep drawing a lot to get the designs right as well as to calibrate the tablet. You can see the results on two of the pages, where the lines become super smooth in contrast to the rougher areas after figuring out the best settings for digitally inking.

The bee's movie version turned out great, and so did the lobster guy.

I can't wait to color their pic. I hope I don't fail with the colors this time. I still gotta draw a good pic for the Knight and Princess. I won't be using the same names as in the story since they are basically different characters and its a different universe.

When I can't read or write, I just draw.

I might add these characters to the movie to fill some roles that are empty. Or saved for the next story.

Yeah, sort of what I was going for, but I also need to practice other kind of expressions. By Dexter, do you mean Dexter's Lab?

I gotta practice more expressions. I still haven't fully utilized this new style yet.

When I mean Dexter, I mean the following:

http://artisancakecompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/dexter.jpg

In other words, your characters smile like warped-brain serial killers. It's creepy and alienating.

Yeah, that was sort of the effect I was going for. I was playing with the possibility of making the Princess similar to the comic character she was based off of instead of just giving her a different personality. As for the Knight, no reason.

Although, yeah, I do sort of have a hard time with this new style. When I drew that, I actually didn't have the energy to draw, but maybe that contributed to it appearing more alienating than it should have been.

Although for me, it was the side and front view sketches that are all wrong and warped due to the lack of energy.

The Gunslinger's guns and the movie's tykoon bad guy{Who serves the Dragon guy}. The tykoon's mooks are diligant, hard-working individuals who have no individuality. They use to be something else, wether it be pig, bug, elephant, or whatever. They took the pill with the money sign on it, and where transformed into slack weaing, tie tying, straight shirted, mindless minions who follow orders without question. Their weapon of choice is a giant ball point pen that shoots lasers. There are a few that use clipboard shields and there's the even rarer "mortar" types that use staplers as grenade launchers. There are other types, and you can be sure they use some kind of oversized office supply for a weapon.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/5f93015f3b7d4eb195326d892a45311b/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1346016774000

Gunslinger's techniques are all in his shells. Instead of just manifesting the attack at the moment he needs it, he has to use his powers to create a bullet of psi and energy. The bullets will differentiate in power, property, and number of shots it has. The red shell is his bread and butter for all situations, good number of shots, sufficient power, and firing rate. The green shell has the highest firing rate as well as highest ammo capacity, but has the least power. He uses it for taking out weak mooks in large groups. The blue shell fires a glob of energy that looks and sounds like the sawa shot from AC2 as well as being powerful. The Orange shell is the trick shell, it is a ricochet type, he can use it in conjunction with his insane aiming skills and shoot somebody behind a wall by calculating the trajectory and angle of the shot. The Pink shell is a slow shot that explodes on impact, the radius of the explosion is enough to catch large groups of mooks. The purple shot is the most powerful shell he has. It is so strong, that each shell contains only a single shot. So once loaded unto each gun, he only has two shots. It's for when every shot matters.

And finally the HALF SHELL. The strongest attack he has in his arsenal. The shell is so strong, he needs both guns to contain its power, thus the shell is split in half and given to each gun. In order to fire it, he has to put his guns together, they'll attach and form a single powerful gun in order to fire it. Very inconvenient, but he uses it for the most dire of situations.

The second illustration depicts IF the gun had an alternate mode, but doing so would actually make the gun more fragile instead of being sturdy enough to block basic sword attacks. OR I could just make it be fragile in its alternate mode. In any case, his gun's alternate form is able to enhance some property of whatever shell he is using, such as its speed, power, range, firing range, or all at the same time at the cost of less increase due to diluting the distribution of power. His guns are sort of awesome. These might not be the final designs, but its a start. I usually end up brainstorming various designs sometimes.

Knight's blade and stance.

Fighting Dragon, movie version, you can see the simpler, comic design in the middle left.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/869beba0be7649ce8a0a93f1a8357350/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1346103610000

Knight's techniques.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/8bf9a9ec426f465aa8ff4f738bb369c4/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1346103603000

Princess's techniques and Royal Magnifying Glass. The energy blast she emits from the magnifier disperses the further it travels. With Psi, that power can stay compact and travel in the form of a beam or other similar attack.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/4187dd1c7f24407d8a13ada017b3fd18/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1346103597000

The Princess must use psi in order to manipulate the energy into lasers, beams, and arrays. By default, the magnifier alone just lets loose an energy blast like in the image before this.

Well, I'm not literally making a movie, but trying to write a script in the style of a movie screenplay, in order to learn about story-telling and better characterization. The result has been that I've gotten more serious about the designs and they've gone up in levels over the comic version. By thinking of it as a "movie", I found that I try harder in all aspects of the creation process since I'm designing with the idea that millions are gonna be watching this. D: It makes me more self-conscious I guess, and thus, I feel like I can't skip a beat or get lazy at any point in the process, period.

Originally, I got the idea of making a screenplay with the intention of submitting it to AmazonStudios, but after re-reading their FAQ, it kind of sounds like they can keep your idea in stasis for up to 3-4 years and during that time you can't make more than a single book about the characters. The "movie" was suppose to be based off the comics, and have a very small cast and be very self-contained, one shot. But the more I wrote, the more I kept bringing in characters for "sequels", and before I knew it, I've practically re-invented the universe. As an alternative, I've been thinking about making either a Graphic Novel or Video Game based on this new "movie level" idea.

And after everything I learned about story-telling, I see now where I've gone "wrong" in my web comic, and decided to go with the new idea instead. The five beasts, bug brigade, and others will have versions based off them in this new universe. Right now, whether it be for the screen play, or sequential story-telling, I'm still working on the outline of how the story would go. I feel that its far more epic and with better characterization this time around. If the "movie version" becomes a comic, then the designs from the webcomic will be used for when I make a game based on a game design that is a modified version of turn based RPGs that I was working on months ago.

Also, the Ogre guy, "movie version".

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/c640b430d7c9455abe7fd9f24139346e/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1346024810000

Now I gotta go research stone clubs, I've been meaning to the past few days. I want to make his fighting style as fun as the gunslingers or knights.

I finally named them, the Knight Gofrido and Princess Pifira.

http://api.photoshop.com/v1.0/accounts/58b333c444514870ad19b5d2225dee4f/assets/d7181be2451d461abf8b993b4a39130a/renditions/1024.jpg?md=1347840260000

By the way, the weapons where done in illustrator, it's easy to draw structured objects in illustrator and actually pretty handy too. Work and full time school eat up so much time. I probably won't get to draw again until two weeks from now, yikes. Hopefully, I can get something drawn in on thursday or the monday after this.

After some more work, it looked like this, not sure if I improved or ruined it since when you are looking at something for so many hours, you really can't see if its good or not. At least for me anyway.

http://i.imgur.com/WGJWz.png

I still got some more work to do on the teeth and the games which are lacking. I estimate the entire dragon would take 16-30 hours, so I'm just sticking with the head to get better at this. I'm doing this to see if I CAN do this or if its beyond my reach and stuff.

After some more working on it:
