Cast a Character for ROTK 11

Shirtless Crackhead

Recommended Posts

So here's the dealy-do, I am getting ROTK 11 and need to come up with officers for a created force, as ROTK 11 is a force game and not a single-character game. There's 24 "secret" characters, and I will probably issue those out to the historical forces.

So here's what you can fill out/pick/whatever.

Portrait (Male and Female)

^ There's technically a selection for character models. But some are going to be or are taken. Pick one you want, if it's taken, I'll get one close to it and/or just pick another one.

-Surname (8 characters max)

-Forename (8 characters max)

-Sex (male or female)

-Birth Year

^ I think the range is 135-250 AD for birth, I'm pretty much going to make everyone born around 170 AD unless slated otherwise for purposes of relationships. There is a lifespan selection, but everyone is getting the max 99 years for that.

-Father

-Mother

-Spouse

I won't be creating any family ties to historical officers, so if you want to be related to another created dude, you can do so. If you want to be parent/child, you can pick going older and/or younger from the baseline 170 AD birth. Kids become active officers at 15. So basically you enter the game 15 years after you are born. You must be 15 years older than someone else to be their parent. So if you want to be a parent to someone who's born in 170 AD, you need to be born in 155 AD or earlier. You all probably get the jist.

-Sworn Siblings (blood brother/sister)

You can pick up to two for this, again no relations to historical officers is going to be going on.

-Close Friend

This one is already picked for you, to create force loyalty.

-Liked Officers (people you relate to)

You can pick up to four for this (one's taken for loyalty reasons), and you can pick anyone created or historical. It's not necessary, but there's an in-game mechanic for compatibility with relationships. If you want to know more read this, it's for ROTK 8 but the same mechanic is in ROTK 11 from what I gather.

-Disliked Officers (people you don't relate to)

Same idea, just in reverse.

-Base Abilities

--Leadership

--War

--Intelligence

--Political

--Charisma

^ All go 1-100, what each stat does if pretty intuitive (to me). If you want to know more, you can read this general FAQ on ROTK 11 or read below in the spoiler box.

LDR or Leadership

-Effects troop strength in the field (along with Aptitude for your unit).

-Effects unit movement in the field (along with any related skills).

-Effects city defenses (when you are the Sovereign or Prefect aka Mayor)

-Effects raising City order (doing inspections)

War

-Effects how good you are in duels.

-Effects how good you are with tactics.

-Effects how good tactics are against you.

-Effects how often you get injured or killed by tactics and stuff like fire in battle.

-Effects repairing structures.

-Effects drilling troops.

INT

-Effects how good you are in debates.

-Effects how good you are with strategies.

-Effects how good strategies are against you.

-Effects how good you are at making weapons. (spears, pikes, crossbows, etc..)

POL

-Effects how good you are developing city structures. (markets, barracks, etc..)

-Effects how good you are at selling or buying food.

CHA

-Effects how good you are at recruiting soldiers. (along with FAME)

-Effects how good you are at finding officers. (along with recruiter)

-Effects how good you are at hiring officers. (along with War for duels and INT for debates, if needed)

-Aptitudes

--Spears

--Pikes

--Bows

--Cavalry

--Weaponry

--Navy

^ Aptitude goes C, B, A, and S. C basically means you suck at using those units, B means you get the basic tactic, A means you get two (basic, intermediate), S means you get three (basic, intermediate, advanced).

Spears are good vs. Cavalry, bad vs. Pikes

Pikes are good vs. Spear, bad vs. Cavalry

Crossbows are ranged unit.

Cavalry are more mobile than foot, good vs. Pike, bad vs. Spears. Horse tactics can force duels.

Weaponry are siege engines, good for blowing up structures.

Navy effects combat when you are on the water, rivers and such.

-Skill

Skills are a rather complex thing, so you can choose to leave that selection out, and I'll pick an appropriate/useful one for you. Also in the FAQ I linked above and here towards the bottom, there is a list of the skills and the lengthy details on what they all do. There's more than I was willing to type out here, but you only get one skill, if you want one. Generally speaking, I'm going to pick your skill, so don't worry too much about picking one.

-Traits

--Character - Timid, Cool, Bold, Reckless

--Voice - Timid, Cool, Bold, Reckless (only Cool and Bold for females)

--Tone - Normal, Polite, Dignified, Pompous, Reckless, Courtious, Humble, Frank

--Court - Ignore, Normal, Important

--Aspiration - Military, Royal, Self, Steadfast, Able, Goodly, Eminient, Free

--Growth Period - Maintain, Precocious, Normal, Late Bloomer

--Ability Persistence - Long or Short

^ Again this is all relatively complex, if you want to know more, you can refer to this

. It effects how you act in debates pretty much, and maybe a couple other things. Not really important, but it's something. Growth Period and Ability Persistence effects how your stats develop with age, Maintain and Long being the default (you keep your selected stats pretty much the whole time).

-Model

I'm pretty much going to pick this one for you guys, the list is short and pretty stupid. Click

if you want to see what it's about and/or want to pick a specific one and/or color for your dude(s)/dudette(s).

--Intelligence 71 (how good war strategies are)

--Political 99 (how good you are with city scenarios *growing farms, commerce, etc*)

--Charisma 95 (how good you are with talking scenarios *recruiting people, making treaties, etc*)

^ Honestly, the stats for this series aren't that intuitive. You shoulda just told everyone what they do. Most people would assume intelligence matters for something other than how good you are at setting fire to the grass on a battlefield, but it doesn't. I posted the short summaries for people...you might want to edit them into the original post.

-Male Civ 2 give me bright rainbow colors if you can.

the obvious roles are as an Advisor or Civil Officer. If I have to do fight I should do admirably, just avoid dueling obviously, and don't expect lots of plots being used...but that's okay cuz I'm S class with siege weaponry.

I really wanted to make a Danger Ranger, but that face was too good to pass up, and most people would make a combat guy anyways so screw it.

I'm probably going to make both PD's and 90's dudes sworn siblings with each other, and close friends with this guy, because he's got the best stache in ROTK 11.

http://kongming.net/11/i/p/port_lg/095-Chen-Lan.jpg

Chen Lan

He also has a gangster as fuck sombrero.

Also, PD can have Chain Reaction, so when you team up, and pull off a strat, it'll be a crit and chain off enemy units that are adjacent.

My only qualm with this is that my guy is supposed to be about the civil side of the game, but whatever if Wealth isn't as useful than Chain Re then fkn DO IT.

I should be getting ROTK 11 tomorrow, so I'll do some play testing once I get it.

I mostly need to figure out the details on how exactly officer creaton works (putting stats up to 99 or 100).

Seeing how powerful or overpowered Black Arts + Focus is.

Getting a better idea of what constitutes an overpowered officer (in terms of stats) and what doesn't.

Also it'll give me a better grasp over how good different unit types are, and how good different skills are.

Here's an example of what Lightning does.

Lightning is never going to be 100% accurate (as Divine Potency and skills like it won't effect anything), but with 100 INT I think it's 75% accurate.

It also costs 100 Will normally (with 100 Will being the default max, 120 if you research veteran troops), so normally you're only going to get one shot. But with Focus, it costs 1 Will, which is less than even the cheap tactics cost (at 10 will per use). Adding to that you can get a 2nd deputy with Gladdened Heart, who refills Will. But that's not really necessary, what you can do is use Intensify, which will make the lightning critical, which I will probably be horrified at how much damage that will do. You'll be able to launch a lightning attack every turn, and decimate units and cities, with any kind of unit. And the damage doesn't change if you lose most of your troops. A guy with 50 soldiers does just as much damage with a lightning attack as someone with 15000 troops. On a side-note, Chain Reaction doesn't stack with Lightning, so you can't chain-lightning, but it will strike adjacent units by default, so it's basically got Chain Reaction built-in, as you can see.

I also believe there's more character models unlocked by beating RoH, which the save file I'm using will have.

So I might be able to use all the other character models. Not sure what ones get unlocked, so again, once I get the game and play around there'll be a big update.

So here's what I've figured out so far.

#1. Lightning is not goober abusive, only because even with 100 INT it's still a 75% chance thing. Although considering that, it's definitely more powerful than any Puissance or Flying General officer could ever hope to be, it terms of damage output vs. Will usage. A successful rush (with spears) will take out ~1200-1300 guys with a 6k force if it crits and causes confusion. Lightning will take out 2300 guys, and do it for 1/20th of the cost, so long as you have Focus. Lightning is also a ranged attack, meaning with Augment, you can hit them pretty fucking far away. Sorcery is pretty neat, but ultimate it's idiotic if you have Lightning on hand. It's absurdly powerful, but I am not going to disable it (seeing as only 2 officers have it) and without Focus it has to burn up 100 Will, which is pretty dumb.

#2. Puissance is meh, if you don't have 100 WAR like Raor does, it can be useful. The lower your war infact, or leadership, the better a skill it is. Because without it, the only downshot with a 100 WAR character is that I can't guarantee a crit with tactics vs. a guy like Lu Bu. But I also intend to execute him as soon as I can, to steal his item. Flying General doesn't get the naval or siege crits, but those aren't a huge deal, and Puissance doesn't get the ZoC ignore, which while not a massive deal, can be extremely useful. God's Command give you crits w/ regular attacks, but it's not worth the 15% extra damage. That's all crits do extra btw, it's just Spear Rush's confuse on crit, that's really the important on that.

#3. All the passive skills work via officers, meaning lieges don't need Benevolent rule to make use of it. They can just have an officer with it. So this means I'm going to give my Liege dude Puissance, since Raor has 100 WAR (and I'm going to give him Flying General). Effects don't stack though, so you can't have a bunch of dudes with Wealth and Taxes and get huge incomes.

GOT THE TP CODES TO WORK, GONNA FUCK WITH RESEARCH UPGRADES

Good combo's

Divine Potency + Focus + Chain Reaction

Augment could be used over Chain Reaction for more range, but it's not a big deal honestly. Chain Reaction lets you get multiple units with Strategies, and Focus means 1 unit can use 120 Strategies before running out of will (unless struck by Sweep Asunder/Majesty units). This let's you cause mass confusion, and if everybody is confused, you can blunder people up, or just attack them with regular attacks. You can also feel free to use fire tactics, you won't get the double-damage you would with Divine Fire, but you still get a crit. This is a seriously powerful tool, I would put it on par with Black Arts + Focus + Augment, which is pretty fucking absurd.

Puissance + Range + Gladdened Heart

Puissance makes all tactics crit, which is pretty good. And it can combo with just about anything, Gladdened Heart is a gimme for spamming tactics. But Range allows you to make better use of Siege engines, and as Puissance gives you the same buff as Siege or Divine Forge would, you are dangerous as fuck with engines. When you get Catapults you can do about 2k to cities or bases per attack. Towers are almost as good. They do serious damage to units as well. Catapults + Range = serious reach, and with research upgrades it becomes a real terror on the field, provided it has support.

Flying General + Anything (Stampede) + Gladdened Heart

Flying General is a great skill, the ability to move freely around enemy units is very useful. Gladdened Heart restores Will so you can spam tactics. This makes you inherently good with Spears as Spear rush confuses pretty much all the time. Just about any skill mixes well with these two, obviously it doesn't buff weapons or naval tactics, so you can avoid that, you're going to be more useful as something else anyhow. Stampede is a brilliant addition, because your cavalry get confusion on any successful tactic. Cavalry giving you additional mobility and attack power, which is just good all around. And when horsebows get researched, you gain range attacks as well, and Flying General buffs those too.

Majesty + Chain Attack + Raid

Somebody in the FAQ I linked listed Sweep Asunder + Majesty as a way to get more Will removed, it doesn't work that way, so skip it. Using tactics with Majesty is a waste, Chain Attack means regular attacks will go off twice 50% of the time, meaning you remove twice the will (20 per attack, 40 if it doubles). Raid combined with Chain Attack allows you to pull off additional melee attacks without taking losses, as either the first or second attack won't have you take any damage vs. non-confused units. It works well with bow units, although Raid is negligible at that point.

~

As for TP Research Upgrades, here's what I will say.

- Research Veteran Troops 1st, it's the most useful one you get at level 1 research, and extra 20 will per unit sounds like meh, but it's important.

- If you are gaining TP fast, by battling alot (or cheating like me), keep research that tree. Level 2 is pretty lame, but Level 3..

- Military Reform will give all your officers the ability to command 3000 more men, and as the base is 5k, it's a huge force buff.

Unit upgrades are good, the first level is good all around, as it buffs tactics by another 10%. Pikes get probably the strongest upgrades, followed by crossbows, then cavalry. Spears really don't need upgrading, they are dope off the bad, and their upgrades are pretty bland until level 4, but at that point pikes will rape them hardcore. So don't worry about upgrading spears past level 1.

The engineering upgrades are faster than the unit upgrades, but you'll be more worried about pulling up the TP than how long it takes for those. The upgrades for Arbalest Towers (which are actually Crossbow Turrets) are very useful, if you want to build defenses (which I'm not big on). The upgrade for Catapults includes the upgrade for Warships, which is the one to get. The buffs for base HP and getting better counter-attacks for bases (Archer and Crossbow Towers) is possibly useful, haven't seen much of that yet. Generally speaking though, if you have strong officers, built stuff is only going to stop piss weak little units, and you're better off just using a unit to smoke them for more TP.

That being said, Gunpowder Research (which takes forever, it's a level 4 technique) can let you use Hell's Fireballs, which will tear up anything they go off on. Pyre ships are unlocked too, which can be used to fortify ports, which is mildly useful. But if you have Warships and the enemy doesn't, you've got no need for that. Divine Waters vs. no skill + Warship = Warship wins.

  • 1 year later...

I got the PC English version of this, and it's pretty good, way easier than dicking around with a PS2.

I'm hoping the ROTK community aka the scholars of Shen Zhou comes out with the English patch for the Chinese version of 11 w/ Power-up Kit, because that will be hella dope.

Either way, I might revive this and stream myself doing a play through.

I might go w/ disabling Black Arts/Sorcery because it's douchey.
