I know for a fact it wasn't because most of the top ranked players (including #1) for MOC5 were using Wyrm. It definitely wasn't banned outright. Joust used a walrus2 EOS OB hover with pursuit missiles on back and rs/wyrm as hand weapons for MOC5. Wyrm definitely was not outright banned.
